"The distinct phenomenon of War-Priests of the Cult of Tempus was a curious one. Despite their name, warrior-priests only took up arms in times of war or when called upon to safeguard merchants or pilgrims along the Salt Road. In practise, the latter was a rare practise as such tasks were far more frequently delegated to local security forces. But when the warrior-priests were called upon, their martial skill was considerable. All manner of rumours surround their ancient and mysterious order. Little is known of their early history, only that they were disciples of an obscure deity whose cult counted only a select few adherents. When the southern kingdoms united under one rule, the War-Priests pledged their services to the new rulers, wisely recognising the need to befriend a new and powerful ruler. Despite this affiliation with the state, however, War-Priests traditionally serve as guardians of the people, with many dwelling in the same villages and lands they are sworn to safeguard.
Their abilities are shrouded in mystery. It is rumoured that War-Priests are living corpses and that their masks conceal the rumours of their terrible initiation. Others claim that they wield magical powers in combat. All of the many rumours about them may be true, or none at all. It is almost certain, however, that the War-Priests have played a role in the spread of such rumours, to cultivate their air of mystery and uncertainty. For a foe that does not know them but only their fearsome reputation will be far more likely to submit to them without violence."
