So you run through the same checklist you can do in your sleep. Where is his sword? Point forward? Point back? Is his structure good? Can you cut through it? Where is his weight? Forward? Back? Is he planted, or is he coiled, light, waiting to strike? What's his range? Can you tell? Is he tall? Short? Dexterous?
Should you attack direct? Feint? If he takes the feint, will he try to defend or just cut you back? Do you have time to be fancy? Are his men coming...
All these questions swirl in your mind, a jumble of incoherent concepts, half formed words, and gut instincts. Even if you wanted to, you couldn't write this down.
But your time is done. He's moving. In measure. The fight is on.
