He's an Earl in the universe he is in for a few reasons. He knows how to do business deals well and is handling a lot of trade relations between companies and governments as the country has only water surrounding it. Also, the time period is in the 1890s when it comes to tech. So, swords and guns are main weapons. The country is not too far from a revolution, the previous lord died with no family, so the new king made Marcus an Earl as he was already helping with foriegn trade.
