In Aztec mythology, the ahuizotl is a semi-aquatic creature looking like a mix of monkey and dog provided with a hand at the tip of his long tail and waterproof hairs hard and pointy like spikes. He waited either underwater or near the water for someone to approach for drinking or bathing in order to catch him with his third hand and drag him into the depths to drown him ; the victims' souls directly went to the sides of the god Tlaloc, which made the ahuizotl a sort of forced ferryman. He then fed on the victim's body, particularly loving the teeth, the nails and the eyes

Strange eh ? Well in a way he ran away and never came back in the legends, hiq jealous brother god of blood and war took over. So maybe in their logic they were being like that because he was dominating ? Plus blood was supposed to be given to the sun or it would stop to shine
That's why they welcome Cortez. They thought he was Quetzalcoatl coming back
