Sometimes, for no particular reason, I go way overboard on the detail of a Pokémon. It always takes way longer than I expect, but it usually works out well.
The aim of this picture for me was to make Dragonite look closer to the menacing look that it had in the first Pokémon games, Red and Blue (I know Red and Green exist, I'm talking European versions). Dragonite was also an outlier in Gen 1, because it didn't look quite so bizarre, unlike most other Pokémon in that game.
Anyway, trying to make Dragonite not look so incredibly cute like it does these days.
I failed.
Despite that, it came out nice. The muscle flexing it's doing was a happy accident. I didn't realise it looked like that until I had drawn it and thought to myself "Eh, the world needs more Dragon arm muscle flexing." Maybe...
