It's a mix of things...
back in the 60s-70s there was a wee bit of a conflagration called the Vietnam war...
there was a song by anti war folk group Peter, Paul, and Mary: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qu_rItLPTXc
and there was a very special plane used during the kerfluffle: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EuThvjefCTk it's kinda long but it's got some good "red rain" footage...
The plane was sposedlly able to put 1 bullet per square inch of a football feild in just a few seconds...
and of course they called it "Puff the Magic Dragon"
there was also a movie: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0FyhTBvLu4w

Well the game is goofy sometimes, like watch some "Resort" (map) gameplay vids. I managed once to shoot out a Huey Cobra pilot from the cockpit with the (now nerf'd) hunting shotgun.

Careful, fellahs. That old dame has been there a while, judging from the corrosion on the visible wing. And let's just say that Comp B isn't exactly the most stable when it's been sitting around like that for a fair few years. If she's got any ammo left aboard her, it's bound to be a mite... touchy. Handle it as you would 'sweating' dynamite.
I doubt the airframe we see here could support a 105mm howwie - and most certainly not the recoil.
That was mounted on the Specter, to my (limited) understanding.
Also, specific to this image: That plane has not been down very long at all (said 'corrosion' could be charring). Note the freshly broken tree under the wing, and the lack of any vegetation growing around, in, or on the hull. This looks like a recon just being lucky to find it after it went down.

"Puff" had the three 7.62 mm miniguns and hauled some 20,000 rounds of ammo per flight. They never considered anything bigger for it as these guns were as big as it got.
"Specter" started out with a 105 mm strapped down on the tailgate of the C-130 and had the plane having to fly so the tail was pointed at their target to have a chance to hit. The crews said that when they fired it it was like a kick in the butt when the gun fired.
Item: No village, firebase, or other position was lost to the VC when it was overwatched by Puff.

well, nearly every war was shitty, even the colorful Napoleonic ones. Whomever the pilot was for 'Puff' here must have been amazing to not flip it after hitting the upper canopy of the jungle, nice picture I recently removed some from my pictures from my gallery from this 'police action' as Kennedy called it. I had a close up of a shark flying a phantom upside down and a Black Ops blackshirt firing an AK. I did go into this detail or atmosphere on the background, however.
(I tried to join but was 4f'd by the Navy, then the Marines because of my penicillin death allergy). Everybody else got VA homes that survived, some though never did get over it, they were never welcomed home.

Hrmn...from what I've read in here you prolly should do an intersectional history/culture/sci-fi cross over...explain the song/name of plane/war time/Archer!!!/...and add in a small blur of the Predator in there some where hunting the troops...
*Smirk*

I don't recall them ever side-mounting machine guns in old DC-10s (or similar small commuter planes)... Puff had many faces - from the 7.62 M60 on the side of Hueys to the rotaries that came into play later on the same platform, to the ultimate 'Puff' - the C130 Spectre gunship.
Though I am accepting my *utter* lack of proper historical knowledge, here.
