Timberrrrrr! Wolf...
Years ago, I gave my Mom a Corgi made by Douglas -- I forget the character name, but the one I found was a production prototype. They had to simplify her design to keep costs down. They used to find homes for their prototypes.
I think my niece has her now.

I have what I guess are 'prototype' Douglas plush, in that they were not ever given a general release. A very large Border collie, and three different large huskies I bought them when I visited the Douglas Factory Store, in Keene New Hampshire, three times between 1997 and 2000. It apparently hasn't existed for some time. I was probably the only visitor they ever had from Tasmania.
They used to go to the Eastern States Exposition, New England's 'state fair'. They would set up a display and sell off their latest prototypes and production output. Super nice people.
Are you from Massachusetts? Its one of my favourite parts of the US. Actually the first night I ever spent in the US was in late June in a trailer near the shore of Lake Manchuag. The night before I'd been in Japan, and the night before that in Sydney, so it was all very surreal and wonderful. It belonged to the family of one of my best friends who lived in a house which was literally half in Natick and half in Framingham. I went to MA on all but one of my five trips to the US. I can't travel anymore, and I miss the place and my friends.
Actually, I'm from Southeastern Connecticut, New London County (although the counties no longer have any political meaning). Sounds like you spent that first night in Sutton or Douglas. I frequently go through there on my way to Cambridge, up by Boston. In nearby Webster you can find Lake Chargoggagoggmanchauggagoggchaubunagungamaugg (to find a longer placename, you'll have to travel to Wales).
Yes, I think Douglas is the nearest town, though it wasn't especially near. Well, anyway Connecticut is the first state of the US that I ATE something in! Fittingly, I suppose, at a McDonalds, on the way from JFK. I didn't actually know anyone in CT but I must have driven through it a few times as I went from MA to the Philadelphia area or back three or four times,.
