After having enough of knowing that his nephew was going to be king so he never could. Scar, instead of organising a massive plan involving the Hyenas decides to deal with Simba in the best way a Lion can.
Later when Mufasa comes and sees his brother sleeping with a large pot belly, he just presumes he's had too much to eat and is looking forward for when he wakes up so he can make fun of him for it. However he doesn't know that the now bulging layer of fat on Scar was once his own son.
