I was kind of tricky if you are not used to it, but it helps if you spray the charcoal before hand so it can set and it will help keep the smudging to a minimum. And it also helps if you thin out the paint with terp. Most of my paintings that I have done in high school are charcoal and oil paints... my 2 favorite mediums :)
