ChrisGoodwin inspired me to do this via this piece. This is Scraps, the Patchwork Girl, and Bungle, The Glass Cat, from L. Frank Baum's classic Oz books. Scraps is a ragdoll brought to life for the purpose of being a household slave, but due a kind act of sabotage by a youngster, was given immense brains, so she rebelled against her would-be owners. The Glass Cat is another creation, a sculpted glass cat with a ruby heart and pink marble brains that she is very, very proud of.
Scraps was always my favorite character from the Oz books because she's probably the most intelligent person in Oz, but is so whimsical and carefree that she rarely uses her intellect to do more than tease the other Oz characters. The illustrations of her always creeped me out for some reason (which was weird because I love all the other character illustrations), so I wanted a new version.
And yeah, the composition's off and the background is just a crappy photomanip, but whatever, it was just for fun! <3

"What are you going to give Ozma for a birthday present?"
"I've written a song for her," answered the strange Patchwork Girl, who went by the name of "Scraps," and who, through stuffed with cotton, had a fair assortment of mixed brains. "It's a splendid song and the chorus runs this way:
I am crazy;
You're a daisy,
Ozma dear;
I'm demented;
You're contented,
Ozma dear;
I am patched and gay and glary;
You're a sweet and lovely fairy;
May your birthdays all be happy,
Ozma dear!"
"How do you like it, Dorothy?" inquired the Patchwork Girl.
"Is it good poetry, Scraps?" asked Dorothy, doubtfully.
"It's as good as any ordinary song," was the reply. "I have given it a dandy title, too. I shall call the song: 'When Ozma Has a Birthday, Everybody's Sure to Be Gay, for She Cannot Help the Fact That She Was Born.'"
"That's a pretty long title, Scraps," said Dorothy.
"That makes it stylish," replied the Patchwork Girl, turning a somersault and alighting on one stuffed foot. "Now-a-days the titles are sometimes longer than the songs."

I love this so much! Thank you for drawing it! If you ever wanna draw the Hungry Tiger too, please do. He was always my favorite.

So awesome to see some love for some of Frank's more obscure characters. Gotta love a gal whose motto is "I hate dignity!" : )
I love this rendition of her so much more than the ones in my Oz character artbook, too. In that one, she looks much more like a felt doll, and it's a bit creepy. Your version really gives her some realism and zest.

I know, right? I absolutely adore the artwork for the other characters, but Scraps, who's my favorite character, has the artwork I like the least. ~:P The drawings are so creepy and not in a good way.
I'm really glad you like my interpretation, though! I was basically like, "Amelie as a cloth golem". ~;3

Amelie as a cloth golem. That really hits the spot, comparison-wise. I think Amelie would have approved of Scraps, too!
Geez, of all the uninspired sequels and crap-tastic remakes Hollywood has churned out over the last fifteen years or so in particular, I would *so* love to see a studio make a new adaptation of "Oz" with some of the more obscure characters from the books. "Return to Oz" was so awesome on many levels, and while I doubt they could top it, it'd be neat if they tried. (Hell, let Pixar do it. With all the sequels they're coming out with, it couldn't do them any more damage.)

Yeah, I would love to see that, too, but I won't hold my breath. It's amusing that if they had our movie-making technology back in the thirties and forties, they've have had an Oz series of movies that would have been as big as Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings. But nowadays we'd just get "Where thuh fuck is the Tin Man?! Who cares about this Hungry Tiger bullshit?!"
