Not sure if this was the intention, but what he has on looks so much like a KGB general's uniform. :o
This makes sense, and I had to throw in my own explanation considering the Communist Bloc countries had variations in their uniforms. :p
I am the most familiar with the uniforms of the USSR proper (in the fact I have a few) and the KGB uniform is the most recognizable for me.

Considering both my grandparents (on my mother's side) were former KGB agents, this is what really started my interest in Soviet/Cold War history.
Happy you were enthusiastic about doing the research first because most artists don't know/cannot be bothered with studying the intricate details of a certain uniform. :p
And don't be worried, I think this is such an amazing picture being the reason why I was initially interested in it in the first place.
