yes, thats so true. I can´t tell you how often I have heard someone throwing around this "cannibalism" word around without understanding its meaning.

I feel eating a nonsentient in a multirace world is not cannibalism, so...yeah.

Seriously, mammals eat mammals, it's not cannibalism. So birds eating birds should not be seen that way either.

The way I see it, an anthro eating another anthro (regardless of species) would be committing an act of cannibalism. The same would likely apply to the act of eating the feral version of one's own species. Eating a feral that's not of one's own species would likely be considered acceptable if it can be done without otherwise breaking any laws.

the sapience aspect would be the decicive factor. like "do you consent to being eaten?"
consuming another intelligent, sapient being is a intreaguing concept.
the Kroot from Warhammer for example do eat their fallen comrades as a way of keeping them alive inside them.
has a lot to do with cultural acceptance...but yeah just eating a member of the same animal family is de facto no cannibalism.
I actually one had a vegan calling me a cannibal for eating meat in general.

Of course, there's another layer (sorry!) to this. Chickens, at least feral chickens, are cannibalistic and will not hesitate to eat their own eggs. They also would not say "no" to KFC. So... Maybe the hawk is just insulting chickens.

Cannibalism would be if it was chicken eating its eggs, not if a hawk just ate a hamburger that is usually beef or pork. Chickenburgers and fishburgers has their own names FOR reason.
