The new year comes and while some look to it for change, others would like things to stay just the way they are. Unfortunately for Tabitha Warren her home life gets turned upside down and she has no say in it. Worse, she has to live with people she doesn't know and are actually going to be around. It's not the easiest start to the year for the poor Weavile.

The New Year usually brought a lot of optimism and hope. Many a ‘mon saw it as a chance to start fresh, to meet new challenges and to turn over a new leaf. Some swore that they would use it as a starting point to pick up a new hobby, to get into shape or to accomplish that goal that’d eluded them thus far. The change of the calendar was eagerly seen by many as a fresh start and new changes that would infuse a life with infinite possibility. Change was common for people after the New Year started whether people wanted it or not.
“Tabi!” Licorice Swirl shouted to finally catch the attention of her friend who was driving the car she was in. While the well toned Umbreon enjoyed a good thrill at times she didn’t want to find out how much of one she’d get from driving on the wrong side of the road. Tabitha Warren snapped out of the reverie she’d fallen into and looked as she was about to start drifting dangerously far over before she veered back into the right lane. The girl sighed and continued frowning as she had all day.
“Yer actin’ like yer bein’ sent to live with nuns!” Licorice said once she’d loosened her grip on the door handle, “It’s just yer dad it ain’t that bad,” the Umbreon stopped and grinned a bit at the rhyme she’d made.
“It’s not my dad,” Tabi answered as she looked in her rearview mirror to make sure that her boyfriend’s car was still trailing her. The two cars were following along behind a moving van that was carrying most of the contents of the Weavile’s belongings to where she was moving to. Shortly after the turn of the year she’d been told that her mom had just accepted a new job with a television network in Jubilife City meaning that she was going to be moving. Didn’t seem so bad at first, Tabi had figured that she’d just move in with the Tellamapolou’s who’d practically raised her anyway or just stay at her mom’s place since she’d taken care of herself for the most part. Instead she’d been told she’d be moving in with her father who was finally settling down back in Viridian along with his new fiancée…and her half-sister she’d only heard mention of.
“What is it then?” Licorice pressed, “Yer actin’ like yer being sent to death row or somethin’,”
“I just…,” the girl sighed, “I dunno, Licorice. I mean, mom moving, sure, I suppose its okay just…feels like she doesn’t seem to care it’s my life she’s affecting, you know?”
“Never seemed to pay that much attention when I was around,” Licorice shrugged, “Figured you were used to it by now,”
“Well, mostly,” Tabi admitted, “Just still…feels like this is kinda different. Just, here you go here’s your dad and you’re living with him and you got no choice in it!”
“Thought you and yer pops were getting’ on better,” the tall Umbreon said as she leaned back in the seat and changed the radio station to something heavier. Tabi shrugged in response as she turned down a road to follow after the moving van.
“We are, have been, suppose,” Tabi answered, “Just going to be different actually living with him. That and his daughter too,” Licorice smirked a bit and looked over.
“You mean yer sister?” she asked pointedly.
“Hell, I barely even known her name, honey!” Tabi protested, “I mean, she’s a year younger which meant my dad was cheating on my mom at the time and not being careful,”
“Didn’t you say yer mom was doing the same thing at the time?” the Umbreon asked.
“Well yeah, so no skin off there,” Tabi answered, “That’s not the point though,”
“No wonder yer so messed up with relationships, Tabs,” Licorice commented as they turned down the final street to the house.
“You’re telling me,” Tabi couldn’t even argue the point. Instead she threw the car into park as they got to the nice, cozy suburban home that was where she was going to be staying. Tabi sat in the driver’s seat for a moment and steeled herself as a reassuring pat on the shoulder form Licorice tried to comfort her. It drew a small smile before the Weavile climbed out and looked towards the house.
“Here we are, Bunbun!” Tabi’s father, the rotund Bunneary James Warren, called out to his daughter as he climbed down from the van. The Weavile’s three friends, which included her boyfriend Dominic and Licorice’s boyfriend Robert Manos, all paused and looked towards the young girl who flushed.
“Dad!” she admonished her father. Licorice started to snicker at the name.
“Bunbun?” the Umbreon asked as Tabi continued to blush. Her father came up and wrapped an arm around his daughter.
“Bunbun,” He responded, “Used to call her that because her crest feathers have always been like a Bunneary’s. Takes after her old man!” Tabi just sighed as her friends laughed some more at the explanation.
“Can we just get this over with?” Tabi asked as she pushed off away from her dad and towards her own car to open it up. James looked towards the other teenagers with a confused look as Dominic just shrugged at him. The Pachi moved towards his own car to start loading things out of it since he’d offered to help her move.
“So where’s Trisha at, dad?” Tabi asked after her future mother-in-law. One reason that she was moving in with her father was because he’d decided that at the tender age of forty-five he should remarry and try to be a good father to his two teenage daughters. The fact that his would-be bride was only twenty-five years of age was of no consequence to him. Tabi wasn’t as surprised that he’d found someone so much younger to agree to spend at least a few years with him in matrimony; her dad always was a very smooth talker.
“Oh she’s at the airport picking up your sister for me!” James answered as he opened up the back of the van.
“Who?” Tabi responded almost dryly.
“Your sister,” James responded again. Tabi just shrugged in response like she didn’t recognize the words.
“Victoria…my other daughter,” he finally said with a sigh.
“Oh, her,” Tabi responded as she turned to head inside with a load of luggage. James watched his daughter go and shook his head while he pulled down a piece of furniture. Dominic made his way over to help the older ‘mon get it down and carry it inside.
“This isn’t going to be as easy as I’d hoped,” the Bunneary said to the younger ‘mon.
“Never is with Tabi,” Dom answered with a bit of a grin. The five ‘mon went about unloading the two cars and moving van so they could clear it all out as quickly as possible. Suitcases, furniture, cosmetic cases and lots of clothing were brought in and upstairs towards her new room; all that was except for Tabi who was exceedingly quiet. If anyone asked her anything she answered and talked, but Licorice and Dom could tell something was really bothering her and neither had the chance to pull her aside and ask. They didn’t get a chance to before another car pulled up and two figures walked into the house.
“Knock knock!” yelled out a tall and shapely Ampharos womon who’d been one of the top divas of the promotion that both she and James had worked for, “We’re here finally! And we brought pizza!” The ‘mon who were already there all peered down from upstairs to see the Ampharos and another shorter, younger and round Bunneary girl who held a couple of bags and looked up almost as sullenly as Tabi had been acting.
“Woah, Tabs, your step-mom is hot,” Dom whispered to his girlfriend. He felt an elbow in his ribs come from the other side as Licorice took care of things for the Weavile.
“OW!” He rubbed his side, “Well it’s true,”
“Trish, honey!” James hopped down the stairs before he wrapped his arms around his fiancée and kissed her cheek, “Thanks for picking things up for me,” He then turned his attention towards the girl, “And Victoria! Have a safe trip,” The girl shrugged her shoulders as James hugged her.
“Well enough,” she said as she looked up the stairs towards the gathered teens watching her, “I’m assuming you’re Tabitha,” she said up to the Weavile.
“That’s me,” Tabi gave a nod and showed little in the way of emotion. An awkward silence hung in the air for several moments before Trish looked around and smiled once more.
“Who wants pizza?” She asked as she headed for the recently remodeled kitchen. James followed after her as the kids at the top of the stairs started to make their way down.
“Awesome, I’m starving,” Robert said as he walked the steps.
“Gonna need a hand, hun?” Licorice asked with a teasing grin. Robert just smirked in response as Dom snickered.
“Tabi, dear, help your sister with her bags to her room, its right next to yours,” James said as she grabbed the pizzas from Trish. Tabi continued down the stairs as if she hadn’t heard anything and towards the kitchen right past Victoria. The Bunneary girl didn’t seem to be put out by it and headed up the stairs with her own bags to the room indicated. It took the elder ‘mon a moment to realize that he had one daughter reaching for a slice of pizza and the other not present.
“Victoria have all her stuff put away?” He asked Tabi who shrugged her shoulders and munched on some pizza.
“Dunno,” was all she answered and looked away from her father. The Lopunny frowned deeply at the insolence he saw and turned to fully face her.
“Didn’t I ask you to help her put her stuff away?” James asked bluntly. Tabi lazily looked over towards him.
“You said something about putting stuff away,” she said, “I don’t really remember any part of it involving me,” James narrowed his eyes as his anger began to rise. He’d been dealing with her being less than helpful all day and not being the most open person. It’d finally reached a boiling point for him as he crossed his arms over his chest.
“Young lady, I don’t appreciate you giving me lip like this!” he scolded her. The others in the kitchen slowly fell silent and did their best to blend into the background. Tabi just shrugged her shoulders again.
“I know this whole move isn’t easy, Tabitha, but I damn well expect you to act better than this when I ask you to do something! This is my house so you will listen to me!” the dad routine poured out of James as he addressed the Weavile. He’d never really been one to pull rank like that in his relationship with her, but circumstances were very different and he knew he had to not be a doormat for her to walk all over. Tabi quietly placed the slice of pizza down and headed for the door.
“Fine. Then I’ll go pack,” her answer left him dumbfounded at just how quick she was to pull a stunt like that. He took a couple steps forward to try to stop her.
“T-that’s not what I meant!” He blustered after her. She quickly turned around to glare at the older ‘mon since she was not going to back down at all.
“I know what you meant!” she yelled back at him, “But like hell I’m going to pretend that we’re some kinda happy family just because you want to!”
“That’s not what I’m asking!” He quickly shot back, “I’m saying you need to show me the respect I’m due for being your father!” Tabi barked out a laugh.
“Respect? You want me to show you respect? Like the respect you showed me in demanding I move in? The respect in not asking or giving me an option? The respect in letting me adjust to the changes instead of saying I have to accept someone as a sibling that I’d barely met for two minutes? You mean that kind of respect?” James was given pause by his daughter’s retort but didn’t think he should give up any momentum or ground.
“That’s neither here nor there, young lady! You’re just being rude!” He told her point blank, “And you need to stop,”
“Yeah, I’ll get right on that,” with that Tabi turned and walked out of the room towards the stairs. James watched on stumped at what to do considering he didn’t want to push her anymore but he couldn’t just let her walk away like this. He looked over his shoulder to his fiancée who shrugged her shoulders since she had even less experience being a parent. It was Licorice who stepped forward and munched down on another slice as she watched her friend storm off.
“Ya know…when my parents died I was pretty pissed off,” she admitted, “hard dealin’ with things when everythin’s changed and yer not sure how to deal with it,” James sighed because he knew that she was right. A shove from the Amazonian Umbreon pushed the older ‘mon after his daughter and after a moment’s hesitation he followed.
Tabi sat in her room on her moved bed that was still barren and tried not to cry. It’d been a very emotional day for her even though she’d tried to hold it all back and just get through it. She hated arguing with her father like that, she did like him even if he’d barely been around as she’d grown up. Here she was seventeen and with only a year and a half left of school and what she was used to was gone. People were actually going to be around in the house she was living in which meant she couldn’t be as wild as she was before and her dad was going to have actual rules. He was going to be there! It was weird for Tabi because as much as she’d wished for it, she finally had it and things weren’t going how she’d expected. A knock on the door caught her attention and caused her to look up.
“Bunbun?” James asked as he peered in through the crack in the door. Tabi smirked as she saw her father push his way in.
“Calling me that and coming in without my say so aren’t helping your position, dad,” she told him. She was only half joking, though, and he could tell which meant things weren’t completely lost. He came in further but stopped from going in to much.
“Can I come in?” He asked her. Tabi shrugged her shoulders and looked down at her hands.
“Might as well since you’re already here,” she told him. James frowned a bit but crossed the room to take a seat next to her on the bed and look down at his hands as well.
“Bunbun, I know this is really hard on you, it’s hard on all of us,” He started, “But you have to be willing to bend some to make this all work,” Tabi’s anger started to flare up as he started to scold her again but she forced it down.
“Dad, I know that…it’s just, I feel like I’m the one being asked to do all the bending,” She answered back, “I know Victoria is your daughter…and that makes her my half sister. But she isn’t anyone I even know! You can’t expect me to just go and treat her like family,”
“I was worried about this,” James sighed as he wrapped an arm around her shoulders and pulled her in for a hug. Tabi didn’t resist as a few tears started to come down her cheeks, “I’m sorry if I’m being pushy about this, hun, I just don’t want to let things sit and potentially get worse before they get better,”
“You need to work on your approach, dad,” she teased him a bit. He smiled in return and kissed the top of her head.
“I think we both need work on this whole father-daughter thing,” He pointed out. She nodded her head and smirked a bit.
“Yeah yeah,” she admitted before she let out a sigh and leaned into him a bit more, “Just…let me adjust, ya know? I need some time…I don’t even know anything about Victoria other than her name…no expecting us to be best friends, okay?”
“Okay,” James agreed, “But you have to at least give her a chance. And Trish too,”
“I like Trish, though,” She joked, “But yeah, I’ll give her a chance.” She paused before she got an evil thought, “On one condition,”
“Oh?” the Lopunny found himself almost worried since he did have an idea about how his daughter thought.
“Dom gets to spend some nights over and you don’t get to go all father on me,” she told him. An eye arched as he heard the demand and turned to look at her.
“That’s a pretty big request there, Bunbun,” He answered, “I don’t know if I could let that,”
“You mean like how Trish gets to hang over even though you two aren’t married?” she shot back, “I’m not a virgin, daddy,” James winced at her bluntness.
“I know! But I didn’t want to think about it!” He exclaimed. Tabi couldn’t help but giggle a bit as he thought it over and sighed.
“Fine,” he conceded, “But! Not on school nights,”
“That’s okay. His parents wouldn’t let me do that either,” she admitted. He frowned a bit even as she smiled widely at him, clearly enjoying poking him like this. He smirked and pulled her in for a tight bear hug again which she returned.
“I am glad I’m getting at least a little chance to be around for you,” James told her near the end of the moment.
“I am too, daddy,” Tabi admitted, “I’m just glad someone wants me around,” A few more tears escaped down her cheeks as his eyes started to water up as well.
“I always wanted you, Bunbun,” He told her, “I just didn’t know how to show it,”
“Better late than never I guess,” she said and gave him one more quick squeeze, “We should probably head down and go see the others before they start to worry,”
“Too late for that probably,” He barked out a little laugh, “But yeah, let’s go see them,” the two left Tabi’s new room and headed down the stairs where they crossed paths with James’ other daughter. The three walked into the kitchen to meet up with the others and grab a bite to eat before they finished up all the moving. Tabi was still unsure about everything and wasn’t sure how it was going to work out. She still hadn’t said more than a few words to Victoria who seemed to a pretty quiet girl; didn’t help they were going to be sharing a bathroom. Still, the Weavile figured that she needed to give things a chance, though she was going to miss a lot of the aspects of her old living situations; looked like she was going to have to start keeping it down at night. She reminded herself it could be worse and decided to concentrate on that as she prepared for the New Year.
“Tabi!” Licorice Swirl shouted to finally catch the attention of her friend who was driving the car she was in. While the well toned Umbreon enjoyed a good thrill at times she didn’t want to find out how much of one she’d get from driving on the wrong side of the road.
