The gap in the middle might render it a little perilous.

Presumably the blade on one sword can go into the hole on the other sword, locking both fighters together, leaving them awkwardly trying to free themselves until they decide that peace is the answer, and totally make out.

I think that they're designed with the intention of thrusting attacks and wide slashes, rather than movie-style "traditional" swordfights. Assuming that the energy blade itself is weightless, it actually makes it a very swift weapon and requires little exerted effort to use, therefore the perpendicular "punching dagger" style handle is more practical than the traditional handle parallel to the blade, as it allows you to use a far wider degree of wrist movements to wield.

If you were to slash at something side on with any resistance, though, the handle would fly out of your hand. Its the same reaosn they got rid of side handles for police truncheons; you cant get any power behind it.

But the point is, a blade made of energy should have no mass, and never feel any resistance - it doesn't need physical momentum and power behind it, because the energy in the blade does all the actual cutting work :3

Aye, but what if these fellas here locked swords or one of those energy shields the small guys have comes into play? Unless they pass through eachother then force and momentum will come back into effect.

One would only assume that either you're correct, and momentum would totally break some arms, or the energy would interfere somehow. Either that or they both pass straight through each other...
