> Heaven’s Ring is a busy, circular trade route uniting several major civilizations, as well as countless mountain ranges and smaller villages. Every civilization here survives by subsisting at high altitudes, thousands of feet above sea level; for the world below is blanketed with a deep ocean of opaque, toxic smog, a single whiff of which being enough to steal the air from your lungs and drag you, coughing and gasping, into oblivion. Read through the three posted so far, and they've been fun and amusing reads. I do have a question though in regards to the setting; what determines the occurrence of reformation? The first two stories implied it almost like it was a normal thing, while the third was permanent in implications, so I'm curious about that facet of the setting.
Most predators wear big gemstone amulets known as Soulkeepers (they can be seen on each girl in this image), that capture the souls of any person they digest. Usually, these souls are released, allowing for them to reconstruct new bodies, reforming the prey; however, predators can also expend the lifeforce stored in captured souls to perform magical spells, at the price of making it impossible for those souls to reform. Ultimately, it's up to the predator. Getting eaten by a bandit is usually permanent, because bandits will often expend souls they've captured for use in magic.
