being propelled by a couple of privates that somehow made me thing of black adder.

Panel two happened in real life to the Southern Pacific at Yuba Gap, Ca. on January 13, 1952. Train number 101, the "City of San Francisco", was stalled by large drifts at that location. It took three days to rescue the train with its 196 passengers and 25 crewmen. No one died and the only major difference is that the "CoSF" was not encased in blocks of ice and it was hauled by ALCo PAs and a PB, which are diesel-electrics.
