Homunculi (aka clay-men) are a popular luxury item among the mage castes. They are slow but careful, capable servants, and act as a demonstration of power. They are debatably intelligent, independant creatures. The most expensive are made from porcelain and can be extremely detailed.

The rumour that homunculi are made using the souls of dead humans doesn't hurt - that's the image boost many aristocrats are looking for.
