SCARS
It had been two days since she had woken in the night, gasping in pain. Two days since the night had passed into day, leaving her dimly aware of the memory of blood and bones pressed in her hand. The sting of a needle cracking against her skin, doctors shouting in dismay. The eventual extra stab of pain that barely registered before she blacked out.
One day since she had woken, greeted by her closest friend. Confidant. Protector. Lover. He had gone home for the time being, to catch a nap that wasn't in the hard backed chair at her side. On the other side of the curtain she could hear her room mate grumbling over the phone about having to share her precious room with non-citizens.The squirming ball of white in her arms now was making contented mewling noises as he settled to sleep, thankfully undisturbed by the conversation next door. What was a citizen and why was it so dreadfully important that she must disturb a babe who had already gone through so much just to live? Bree had no answer.
A soft rap on the door made her turn her eyes upward instead of inward. She couldn't help it, she flinched. Trying to swallow back her dismay at the look of deep seeded hurt that had crossed his face she gestured for him to sit.
Kye entered cautiously, looking around. "Arashi...?"
"No, he's home."
"Oh...." There was an unspoken 'good' in his eyes. He hovered, placing his hands on the back of the chair without sitting. His eyes were glancing around the room, anywhere but her and the now sleeping kitten. "Are they treating you well?" He spoke so softly she could hardly hear him. "I heard there was...trouble...I'm sorry I didn't come sooner..."
He sounded so upset that her heart went out to him. Bree smiled. She had long since forgiven him, and for something that wasn't even his fault it was not as hard as it might have seemed. He still caught her by surprise, made her flinch sometimes, but he was a good and gentle man. He would never hurt someone with intention. "They are."
"Bree, I...I just..." He bit his lip. "I came to make sure you were alright. You probably want me to leave...I shouldn't be here. This is for you and for Arashi. I'll go, I'm sorry." The words tumbled like water over a dam, spilling out before he realized it. He turned sharply on his heel, his fur crackling with energy.
She caught him by the wrist, stopping his progress so abruptly his feet slipped from under him and he landed squarely on his ass, staring up at her in bewilderment and possibly a little fear. She could, after all, take his hand right off if she had chosen to do so.
"Kye. I was sorry too, but...Looking at him, I'm not. I'm not sorry at all. Sit," she commanded, letting him go. "Sit and meet your son."
Kye sat, a little painfully, and with one cautious glance at her, allowed himself to look into his sleeping son's face. "He's so small..."
"Small, yes, and strong. You should see him grabbing at fingers! He will be like you, and he will be like me. Here," she held him out to him. "Hold him, I want to take a nap while I can."
"What's his name?" he whispered, holding the infant like he was made of the most fragile glass. He looked mildly scared.
"Odin. Arashi named him. Hold him closer, it's more secure."
"It's his right...He is more his son than mine." He cradled the kitten carefully, as though he would break the tiny body if he jarred him even a little.
"Mmh...But you have the right to visit when you like." Bree smiled, closing her eyes, happy to be able to sleep in the security of knowing her son was safe. She still did not like doctors and she knew she could without a doubt could trust Kye with this task.
"Will you have scars?" he murmured, easing back in the chair and touching Odin's small face with a look of reverence and awe.
"I think so. But I don't regret them. Look what they left. Do you regret them anymore?"
"No. I can't say I do."
