The Sleeping Moon is a sculpture piece I created in 2007. The idea of a crescent shaped sculpture piece originally stated out with clay, but that idea was abandoned when I started having structural issues and I ended up using chicken wire and burlap dipped in plaster. My inexperience with sculpturing methods at the time also led the abandonment of clay for this project. I also wanted something with texture and burlap has that. From the beginning, I had no idea what this was going to be. I just developed an idea in my mind and went with it. In the end, the concept of the sleeping moon comes from the fact that the piece reminded me of a moon and that it was black. The sculpture piece it's sitting on isn't actually part of the Sleeping Moon itself. It's actually another piece called Violet Dreams, but since the Sleeping Moon can't stand up on it's own, it always needs to be sitting on something. Also, I was toying around with an idea back then where my art projects could be presented in multiple ways. With the Sleeping Moon for example, I once had photographs of it on different sculpture pieces and it looked slightly different each time.
As I mentioned earlier, this project started out in clay, but that idea was abandoned. The skeletal frame was constructed out of chicken wire along with various different kinds of wire, some of which included a metal clothing hanger ,which ended up being used for structural support. Strips of burlap dipped in casting plaster were wrapped around the structure in layers. The spirals weren't added until after the first layer of burlap was placed on the structure. They were made out of pieces of thin wire wrapped together. The spirals however did not get covered with burlap. They were just dipped in plaster and were practically glued to the structure. After wrapping the main structure with more burlap to add thickness I started panting it with acrylic paints, but ended up using spray paint as well. The end result is a sculpture piece that was colorized using a combination of spray paint and various different black acrylic paints.
I always liked this one. This piece is the perfect example of how I do most of my work. I start out with a single idea or maybe a few ideas and guild on that idea until the concept evolves into something successful. Even from the beginning when this started out as a clay project, the spiral was always there. That idea never went away. I just didn't know how it would turn out in the end. I think the end result is some that really couldn't be planned. What I'm talking about is mostly the texture. It's on there in a sloppy way, but in a good sloppy way. It makes the piece look even more interesting. My only regret about this piece is that I never built anything under it so it could stand up on it's own. I kind of ran out of time and didn't wan to mess with it after I had finished it. Still, I'm really proud of this piece. It's one of the better art projects I did in 2007.
