Short version:
Thinking of buying a 3D printer and offering small character models on commission with the option of having them 3D printed.
Let me know if you think it might be interesting - but also do consider that it might be costly depending on complexity of the character model, and amount of printing material used. It wouldnt be particularly cheap, per se...
($75-$150+ depending on style of model and material??? I currently have no means of calculating cost atm so that's just kind of a guess without any calculation?? If you know what others may charge feel free to throw me a number, Ill be doing research in the mean time!! Hopefully smaller chibi models will be much cheaper especially if they're built from the bases shown!)
Long Version:
Hello! I've been dabbling in 3D modeling again (Ive been doing 3d modeling since 2011 though, so this isn't a new venture for me.)
Since a friend of mine had access to a 3D printer, I whipped up a chibi model of his character to see how well my work might translate into real life. I've always wanted to get into 3D printing but struggled to find it worth investing in when printing small detail was virtually impossible.
But in very recent years 3D Printing technology has rapidly advanced and a new form of printing is possible using Resin instead of PLA Filament! I LOVE the look of it, print lines are almost invisible. So after seeing the result, I'm very much considering finally committing to investing in a 3D Printer that uses the resin method of printing.
It's not 100% in stone yet But I've been pining for a 3D printer since 2014 and finally technology is looking to reaching a point I can get the results I want! BUT YEAH. PLEASE Give some input if you'd like!

This is super cool! I would be interested!
The resin looks very smooth, I’ve seen 3D stuff in the past that has these ridges in it that made printing look pretty odd. Can I ask how you got your printer to print resin?
And this is a little off track but the digital sculpts look really cool too, so if you ever do a tutorial on those....it would be appreciated 😂💕

The printer that printed the model shown in the photo was a very expensive printer at a makerspace where my friend lives. It's an entirely different style of printer than the kind that use PLA filaments. The resin machines are quite a bit messier, emit toxic resin fumes and need to be cleaned after each print. They're not as "quick & easy" to use as the plastic filament machines but the detail they can print is insane.
Since I already do a lot of working with casting resin, silicone and other fume emitting chemicals I have the equipment to maintain a resin machine already!
As for the models themselves, I use a method called "point modeling", where I create the topology by hand, creating each polygon point by point and extrude from there rather than "digital sculpting" like what you can do in Mudbox or ZBrush. I bought ZBrush Core and have done some dabbling in sculpting, so it's definitely a useful tool to add to my workflow. But I personally have done point modeling for so many years that it's easier, but I'm working to improving on sculpting as well!
