Azul's Universe of Misconception (Steven Universe The Movie)
SERIOUSLY....it's NOT a gem.
*poke poke* Reaaaallly? Cause I SWEAR they look crystal-ly and can glow...
You're seeing things....
Yeah, I know!
That's not what I...ugh. Seriously, you have purple eyes, you're seeing weird things of the same color.
Oh...well...yours are green. Does that mean I look weird?
You're...tyedye....it's...I see fine, that's not the issue! ANYWAY...moving on.
LAST WEEK....The premiere of a Cartoon Network, commercial-free movie occurred. Ordinarily, aside from the weekly Toonami work, there isn't too much we watch there, only giving some passing glances once and while.
But, interest in the movie was high. It was about a long-running series for I think a few years now that I remembered glimpsing in it's early beginnings. At the time, didn't think too much of it. Sure, it looked like it fit in with the other shows, but didn't really make an impact.
From time to time, though, I caught a particularly notable episode or two, that garnered (heh) interest in the show. Ironically there were also short little song bytes that caught my attention, such as "Do It For Her" and "Stronger Than You". Suddenly, I thought that there was more to this show after all.
However, with all the stuff out there already and workload and all the things of life, I never really had the time to dig into the show. But the point was, I knew it existed.
So, when another biggy event was going to happen, this movie, decided...what the hey, we'll check it out.
So glad we did!
Yep. We are, of course, talking about the Steven Universe Movie!
The short recap is that Steven Universe is actually the name of the main character, a boy with a gem in his stomach who goes on different adventures with gem-beings named Pearl, Garnet, and Amethyst. It seemed gimmicky at first, but the few episodes I've seen made me appreciate that there is SOMETHING to this series. There are emotional points that hit hard and interesting set pieces, along with a growing sense of world-building.
Of course, it's interesting to get our perspective, as we don't have the capacity to be fans of the show (not having the time to binge), as we went into the film. Apparently taking two years after the end of it's fifth season (last one?), me and Rigel were grateful to get a little recap from the film itself, with it's opening music number going a little into the character development for, well the main characters. Even though I was a little aware of the character's origins, bravo to the writers to give newcomers a leg up real quick to settle in.
Az was grateful they didn't pull a live-action Grinch on us hehehe.
That was rhyming I think, but yeah, grateful it wasn't ALL musical...
But anyway, watching the movie, the latest incarnation of the series, as the most relevant piece to our experience with the characters and everything was...well...pretty cool.
Yeah, it was awesome!
While I can't claim it as the best 'everything' (that's rather pompous to say of ANYTHING) the film was a nice little romp, and centered on aspects aside from the whole 'bad versus good' dilemma. While most of the characters went through a sort of 'redo' thing...it was actually Steven that impressed me the most. His interactions with the film's antagonist were the big highlight to me. The way the whole thing was handled was SUPERB. For a Cartoon Network movie to do what they did...heh...other films should take notes.
I swear, it made me cry in the middle there! How Sp---
SPOILERS! Clamp it! Not sure everyone's seen it yet.
That's...considerate heheh.
Hey I am.
I know.
But that's also a characteristic Steven has as well, and while he's made his missteps like any decent hero would, he also expresses other qualities that truly make him seem like the hero he was brought up to be in the series. As said, me and Rigel haven't SEEN that growth, but the end result certainly makes us interested in it's progression.
All in all, the movie was pretty entertaining, had an ACTUAL hero, and seemed like a good cap to a series that seems to have affected so many people. So...good for you Steven Universe. Maybe one day, when things are less chaotic, we'll binge your show and share the journey.
....'It's the truuuuue, it's the truuuue'
That wasn't as catchy to me as 'Other Friends'...BOY that sucked me in. I kind of got clued into WHO this is because I paid attention, but that whole "game you didn't know you were playing" foreshadow was...BOY....
...are you SURE this isn't a gem *poke*
...ugh...at least people are paying attention to the upper half of me for once.
