Zoe Schaefer was born on the planet Solont, in a middle-class family on the outskirts of December City. She had one younger brother born nearly a decade after she was. Her father was an ace fighter pilot in the Solont Space Force (SSF), and her mother was too sickly to maintain steady employment. By the time Zoe was born, Solont had been in the First Contact War for years, and thus she never experienced life during peacetime. With her father away on missions more often than not, she spent most of her days with her chronically ill mother, who she helped take care of from a young age.
For as long as she could remember, Zoe wanted to be like her father, but at her mother’s behest, she didn’t let her desire to follow in his footsteps take over her life, and she made a wealth of good friends. As time passed, the war with the alien menace grew worse and more destructive with every passing month, and three years before she joined the academy, her mother and her received the news they feared the most: her father had been declared missing in action. If they were lucky, he died in combat. If they weren’t, then it was likely that a fate worse than death had befallen him at the hands of their aggressors: assimilation by the otherworldly menace. It took the heartbroken Zoe some time to accept the news. Her father was far from the first, and would certainly not be the last soldier to vanish, but he had always seemed invincible to her.
Zoe’s demeanor changed significantly in the following months, something that deeply concerned her grieving mother. She gradually became more intense, shrugging aside both friendship and companionship lest they distract her from her academic and athletic excellence. At first, a desire for revenge spurred her on, but by year end, it had all but sputtered out, replaced by a fiery determination to protect her mother and baby brother. Wherever he was, her father couldn’t fight anymore, but she still could.
When Zoe finally enlisted in the SSF, she did so with top marks, and took to flying like a shark to water. Soaring through the sky in a plane was the first time she remembered being truly happy in years, and she was damned good at it. Confidence quickly turned to arrogance, and the young cadet didn’t trust her squad mates, treating them like they would only end up getting in her way.
The war had begun before she was so much as a twinkle in her father’s eye, but she intended to finish it, or die trying.
Still a teenager, Zoe is cocky, determined, and thorny towards her squad mates. She knows that she’s the most talented pilot there, and she isn’t afraid to act like it. She can quickly become aggressive or even outright hostile when confronted, not afraid to throw a punch. She’s eager to take the fight to the aliens and see an end to the worsening war once and for all for the sake of her family and her world. She appreciates the structure the military has given her life, even if she is at best disinterested in any aspect of her job that doesn’t involve flying.
On the other hand, when it is time to fly, whether it be in space or in the sky, Zoe is energetic, enthusiastic, and even joyous. It, and by extension her aerospace fighter, is the only thing in her life that makes her feel alive.
There is, of course, a softer side to her, but she hides it from most of the world, too driven by the burden to protect her family to actually trust anyone else. She puts the weight of the whole war on her own shoulders, and, to be honest, she doesn’t even realize how lonely her standoffish arrogance makes her. She garnered a lot of attention from her classmates at the academy for her raw skill and enticing good looks, but she spurned every attempt at romance. When the opportunity presents itself, she takes the time to call her mother and little brother back home, and she sends money back frequently. When something is troubling her, she exercises to clear her head, and her hobbies include swimming and origami, which help her focus free of any annoying distractions from her peers.
Deep down, most of all... she just wishes she could see her papa again, one last time.
