Development art for an upcoming commission. There are many things from the Fallout Equestria universe that I like. One thing I really don't like is how firearms were handled, or not handled. I really, really don't like the concept of holding weapons in one's mouth. Either firearms or melee.
One the weapons that Little Pip acquires early on is a scoped, double-action, magnum revolver called Little Macintosh. Both me and the client do not like the mouth trigger and grip. So the client wanted me to redesign it. So I have.
When a being's limbs end in a single, inflexible digit it makes performing one hand/limb tasks trickier. One advantage of pistols and revolvers is that in theory they can be used with the one hand. Held, aimed, and fired all with one hand. However scoped, magnum handguns are rarely fired one-handed anyways. They're usually fired with both hands and often from a rested position. So I wasn't very concerned with the fact that this design doesn't permit one-handed operation.

yeah, you also have to take in Milling and construction, the firearm is too small for beings that have large single toes on the end of there limbs... now the cyber cloves Idea used by K. Garrison in The Legend of Anne Bunny totally took care of that problem Or the Ponies employe people that have fingers to construct weapons... that weapon has no way to pick it up without hands....
I dunno, the original story assumed ponies were quadrupedal, so short of pegasai (and some zebras) a hoof-mounted weapon would be pretty unfeasible. You'd either have to go prone or brace yourself on a support every time you wanted to shoot.
I think it's easier to assume the mouth-mountings made liberal use of recoil reduction. Perhaps additional recoil mechanisms in the handle, extremely heavy materials, etc. That or they simply have the gun strap higher on the leg and have the trigger rigged to the hoof or somewhere else on the body, similar to how prosthetic limbs have the cables rigged to other still-functioning muscle groups. This has the advantage of not smacking your gun into the dirt if you suddenly have to run.

This is true but your enemy still has to do the same thing everytime. So that sort of levels the playing field a bitl Yes folks like to point to the concept of unicorns levitating their weapons, and undoubtedly some are very good at it. However I imagine being able to consistently levitate the weapon the same way every time for consistent sight picture, trigger press, recoil control etc. Especially if accuracy is the game. Maybe not as much of an issue at CQB ranges, but still a trick.

I have weapons like that in my Equestria dreamscape and I've done some design work for the Roan RPG that follows similar paths, but I decided against that choice here for 2 reasons:
1. That would've strayed even further from the original design of Little Macintosh, and I was already taking enough creative liberties with the design in this piece. I wanted it to be somewhat recognizable to fans of the story.
2. I feared it would restrict the weapon to her left leg which will not be visible in the final piece since Little Pip constantly wears her Pipbuck on her right leg and it is a bit bulky. I didn't want to elevate the weapon away that much to shoot over it, and I was worried about what the muzzle blast over the screen would do to the device.

Zebras had disadvantage at range and in magic, but they compensated in more powerful hoof-gripped weapons and CQC (until power armor came in picture). Zebra could stand on two legs (they can irl, kinda), earth ponies could not. Power armor allowed non-unicorns carry own weapon platforms.
WHere it was said that PipBuck is on right leg? PIPs in Fallout are on left arm, and Blackjack 100% had one on left. But people keep drawing it on right leg.

mouth-gripped weapons were apparently a magicky gimmick in-universe. Earth ponies have magic to operate tools in way a no-magical being cannot. Also you may remember that Little Pip was shocked to see ponies shoot while holding weapons in their mouth. In all Stables security were unicorns, so she never saw that before.
Still, inverse barrel design like Chiappa Rhino pistols and spring-slider muzzle brakes , like ones designed by Izhevsk company, for smoothbores and rifles make sense more for species with less digits.
Apparently they had gem enchanted to negate recoil (and BM had one along with magical zoom). This probably looks like late redesign when owner ran out of parts, after Lghtbringer event, when magic levels (and supply of spare parts) were exhausted.
Or it was adapted to be used by zebra.. In Homeland (or was it Horizons?) Somber kinda mentions that Zebra design was different and weapons were operated by hoofs. Peppermint maybe?
