workshopping atm, but basically, they were just a plain ol spaceship owned by io (another android OC of mine from the No Man's Sky universe). Udamatsu has a mid-space collision with a sentinel and somehow that fuses the core inside Udamatsu and they gain sentience. So now Uda just wants to protect and help io, like they did before. heres an older pic:
