Maybe it was just necrotic damage disguised as fire.

You could be fire resistant not fire proof. It's like how armor is sword resistant. It resists swords, but only until a certain size of sword and power of swing.

In either case, a little lantern is unlikely to do much damage.

Meh, I have seen quite a few not so adorable faces of yours in there. Otherwise, sure, I find you generally adorable, unless you are really scary looking, then not so much. Be glad you can be both, I, on the other hand, have to try very hard to look scary and even then I still look adorable most of the time.

It's all that fuzz that's your downfall. I'm sure if you just shaved off all your floof, you'd be downright terrifying.

Did he at any point when you were browsing his wears say "What are ya buyin', stranger?" and/or "Heehee ha ha, a good choice stranger!" and was he in a 2-parting robe?

Sounds like an arms dealer I know by the name of the merchant. He's an odd case. He'll see you guns and medical aid but doesn't have things like ammunition. What's more is he doesn't allow you to buy first aid if you have something that can fully heal you. First aid spray for an heavy injury? Outta luck if ya have a full potion or herbal remedy that does the same thing, he'll deny the purchase. I upgraded my bow and arrow to crossbows with timed-explosive bolts, and he said that was a "wise choice, stranger", and I asked him for ammo and he said he can only increase my quiver size, so I shilled it out to him... Turned around and fired 3 at the shooting range and they worked well...
When I turned back, he was gone. With an blueprint for the bolts on the floor below on some aged yellowish paper.
Chances are he dropped a blueprint for fire lanterns for ya...
