The only thing remotely factual I saw was at the very beginning when they go under the ground. It's a big aluminum ball underground called a Neutrino collector, which collects the various invisible particles from the sun. It passes into bullshit when they say the neutrinos "mutated"..which can't really happen, there are already about 4 different kinds of neutrinos but they can't mutate...they are not genetic material...

Exactly! After that shit is just Hollywood magic that sucks ass and makes me want to pry my eyes out.

yez, and another thing.

They don't even mention the sun thereafter. The rest of the problems we face in the movie are entirely geological, earthquakes, tsunamis, super volcanoes, "falling crust". If the mantle were to fail in such a catastrophic way, the magnetic field surrounding the earth would also disappear, making the suns effect on the planet even more devastating. Just wish they did a little more research in modern disaster movies....

Not to mention, tectonic plate shifting could NEVER happen that fast. Even if it started now, plates wouldn't be collapsing in 2012, and that shit in Yellowstone? There would be obvious signs of a super volcano. Also, it wouldn't explode in a fire ball, just ash and heat.

tl;dr science was borked in that movie.
