I remember reading Life of Pi, and the author describing them as a hodgdepodge of different animals, including that they were part giraffe as far as their necks.
I wish I could remember the whole thing--it was actually very interesting how he described them, and I would love to see how someone who had never seen a hyena before draw one from that description alone.
