While working on Patreon reward and commission stuff I took a break to do some studies of one of Luna's mares-in-waiting. The unicorn mare Silk Cords. In many ways she's one of Luna's most effective operatives in my Equestria dreamscape.
One reason is that many ponies see her friendly, relaxed calm, laid back demeanor, and don't perceive her as being a competent combatant. Even when she's fighting her martial art style looks more like rhythmic floor gymnastic mixed with an interpretive dance routine.
Even her fellow mares-in-waiting often find her challenging and difficult opponent who often gets the best of them.
Tonight 8/24/19 starting at special time of 6:30pm Pacific I will be streaming on Picarto.

Fun fact: there is, in fact, an actual archaic Japanese fighting style (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hoj%C5%8Djutsu) with the same premise: using cord or rope in close combat to entangle and tie up an opponent mid-fight. Supposedly it was used by the law enforcement of the time, and involved using a coil of cord in a held on the belt with one end free. This is still taught in some places today.
There's also some use of this in some Filipino martial arts, but in a much simpler context (typically to supplement existing grapple and throw techniques) using clothes like sarongs, scarves, or sashes.

This brings up idea that a unicorn can turn pretty much anything into a tool or weapon with enough control and power.
There was a weapon known as meteor hammer ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meteor_hammer ), which is a length of chain with weights on end. But unicorn can control entire length, so weights become a little redundant if not detrimental. A length of anything, rope, chain, cloth , can become a versatile defensive tool.
On other hoof, now we know why driving Rarity REALLY angry may be a Bad Idea.

In the movie 'Shanghai Noon', Jackie Chan improvises one out of a rope and a horseshoe.

Yes, though that use pattern is unrealistic, is more for show and rises question why his character could have an idea of that weapon. As RPG players say, it's an "unusual background". But I remember a couple of nonfiction movies which demonstrated technique of meteor hammer use.
