The final design for the rifle used by Gabi Wulfhelm. It's basically a mix of the M1 Garand rifle and an AK47, used as a light scout carbine. In the story it's official name is the RLWWM Gewehr 64 or just the 'M14 Rheinlander'.

From what I've seen Garands have a lot of parts which need moving with every cycle, even moreso than a lot of other semi-auto rifles. A x39 might not have enough ass behind it to cycle one.
That said, there have been Lee Enfields modded for use with the round, and with 30 rd magazines. That and a lot of guys try to mod the sks into something that looks like an M14, which isn't that far off. You can even get the m14/Garand style ironsights for them.
