Ammaterasu is female, however, Shiranui is male! I understood Okami to be a female god in a male's body, although I can see it interpreted differently... the creators of the game were deliberately vague on identifying a particular gender.
But since this is parody, it doesn't matter anyway! I would've done it the same regardless of gender, cause the Sheriff just looks really really awesome that way. ^.=.^
