This year's theme at ACFI is cyberpunk and I plan to dress up as some sort of futuristic cybersoldier/mercenary with all kinds of electronic doodads. I already got a tactical vest along with a thigh mounted holster. I want to add some weapons and the like to the vest so I went looking for ideas.
My workplace has these metal floats used for valves and switches. A bunch of them had some sort defect and was being scrapped. I grabbed a few and planed to use them somehow. It then occurred to me that they sorta resembled those Soviet style grenades especially with the extensions screwed on the top. The body a little elongated than the real thing but then the shape could have changed in the future so there is that.
So went to work modifying them by placing some discarded rubber o-rings around the middle to simulate a crimp ring. Then I gave it some green paint. I wanted to go with a more drab olive green but this is the closest I found at Home Depot. Good enough I guess.
It is still very much a work in progress. I have some pull rings but need to make spoon parts. I am thinking of using those metal two-hole punch binder clamps. Easy to bend into shape methinks. I thought I have some but can't find them. Oh well, they're cheap enough to pick up. The end result won't be perfect but I believe it'll be quite convincing, especially when not looking at them up close. Good enough for a costume anyway.
The float on the right is unmodified. The next one I painted first. It came out rough and duller than the other, probably because I didn't shake the spray can enough. The other two are a bit smoother and shinier. I wanted flat paint but once again I had to settle as Home Depot just have satin in that color.
I don't mind the color or texture differences as I can explain that they came from different lots and/or factories. Quality control in the dystopian future could be suspect. As long as they go bang when they supposed to go bang is all they care about I'm sure.
I am also working on some sort of assault rifle thing that I am modifying from a toy gun. That'll come up next.
