In Kanaka culture, there are two types of warrior class or Koa: Koa Kahu, who are guardians of the isles, and Koa Hele, who travel the world in search of sources of magic.
All prospective Koa must complete ten trials, testing their fitness, skill, personality, and valor. After each trial, a triangular tattoo is acquired which, when full realized, forms a large downward-pointing triangle on the chest. Shoulder tattoos are personal symbols, incorporating motifs unique to each island system. Finally, a band around the arm signifies which type of Koa they are.
The signature weapons of Kanaka warriors are a dual-purpose club/rifle-wand and small harpoons which can be thrown through telekinesis.
