Just as her pregnancy had been easy and comfortable, so was her laying. Her elastic body easily pushed out egg after egg for nearly three hours while she stretched and coiled her long body up as needed to help. Her mate was at her side the entire time, feeding her shell fish as needed, protecting her from predatory fish that seemed to flock close, and examining the eggs. Many of the eggs were duds, their insides a solid milky color that had never become anything. Her mate tossed these to the predators, who eagerly snatched up the eggs and swam off to eat them elsewhere. Bridget wasn't surprised at the duds. She and her mate were of different species, after all, it was a miracle for them to be this compatible at all.
The dozen or so eggs that were successful, though, joined a stack in the nest. Bridget and her mate coiled their tail and tendrils around them protectively and waited for them to hatch. Bridget found herself exhausted by the event and fell into a fast sleep. When she woke, the eggs had hatched and she found herself surrounded by her young. They were numerous combinations of her and her mate, from a green octopus-like hatchling to a mermaid baby that had a yellow and green spotted tail. They seemed very self sufficient already as they hunted for food among the rocks, but orbited around their mother diligently.
At first, it looked like her mate was no where to be seen. Then, in the far distance behind her, she felt and heard something huge rumbling in the water as it stirred. She smiled as she held one of her babies closer, understanding. No normal octopus could have done what her mate did, of course. It would take a powerful force to warp reality and another living creature like he did. But something powerful would be a bit too much for a first date, so a clumsier disguise would be better for first impressions.
(Now that you can reveal yourself as you really are,) she thought with a smirk, (I wonder what next time will be like, my dear husband.)
