Ah, well... there are tons of obscure things in both D&D and other settings, here i'll try and showcase the usual as well as the unusual.

I grew up with this stuff and i always loved how people showed a lot of fantasy...

...in the stuff we were supposed to kill. "Oh, want to play a wemic™? Too bad, you're only supposed to kill them" eh. Not a fan of this reasoning. So in the setting i'm building: "if it has an intelligence of human level, you can play it". Too high or too low and no, you still won't play it. Not because the GM is going to do a better job, but because if it's handled by the GM you guys are supposed to meet them temporarily, and everybody is good at faking genius level intelligence if you meet the genius for ... looks at watch ... 5 minutes.

The wemics™ Ailuro Centaurs in my setting are, much like every other race, a mixed and mottled thing. You can meet them tribal, you can meet them civilized, and there are even high tech speckles here and there.
