Are you perhaps a fan of the Musashi games? The main character uses a similat weapon loadout to the warrior with the broad paddle or oar weapon, whichever you prefer to call it, and an actual sword.

never heard of it until i looked it up on good after reading your comment :P i just like dual wield and big swords, and females with big swords... so that's where it comes from :P
