Singing In the New Year - Commission for Penn
What a wonderful way to start my Artwork for 2010!
Scotch, Penn's Griffin character, is adorned in an actual Ferguson Tartan cloth pattern with a traditional Sporran. He's singing in the New Year with "Auld Lang Syne" (Scottish pronunciation: [ˈɔːld lɑŋˈsəin]) in the London Black Friar's Pub, England.
I had a tremendous amount of fun working in the historical accuracy of this picture. The Black Friar is an English Pub located at 174 Queen Victoria Street, EC4 is a narrow 'flat-iron' wedge shaped pub, built in 1875 near the site of a thirteenth century Dominican Priory. It is a masterpiece of Art-Nouveau styling and the only pub of it's type in London. Ale and Cider are the staple drinks in this pub! And the picture that Scotch is standing in front of are the Dominican Friars working for their daily bread.

I had a dream once that MuscleWolf and I tag-teamed against WWE and we literally sent all of them to the hospital. Then Vickie got into the ring to do her "schtick" of bitching and I "drop-kicked" her through the Auditorium roof.
Then MW and I did poses for ten minutes. All you could hear was , cheering, moaning and f*pping from the audience...

The background picture was superb for its positioning of Scotch with the lighting and the interesting bas relief picture of the Friars. I went through literally over two dozen shots and over 30 pubs (from Australia, America, and Europe) before I was comfortable with this one. As it is, I altered this picture a lot, too. There were small stools in fronts that I have to get rid of (and then "rebuild" the fireplace and mantel), and I had to tone down the items on the little tables. Someone used a bright flash to take the picture, and the columns and hearth-stone were washed out, so I "rebuilt" them, colour-wise, until the flash brightness was obliterated.
I was looking for a darker, cozier place for him to be singing in. So the lower-half of the overall brightness of the picture was subdued by me while the archway's color above was made slightly more intense. It's all about setting a "mood" for Scotch.
I fell in love with the ambiance of the picture and how Scotch would fit in it. Most people might think that all I do is pick a picture and slap a character there. No. I modify the picture to fit the character. I also usually "blur" the background so it doesn't overpower the character. This time, howeverr, I made an exception because the "storyline" included the background.
See? Aren't you glad you asked?
