JJ the pandacat hybrid yawned as he turned back to wave at some of his friends.
“See you later, everybody!” He smiled at them before hoisting up his backpack and walking outside, zipping up his hoodie. His paws crunched under the leaves in the walkway of the house as a light breeze came up and tickled his fur with a bit of cold as he rubbed at his collar to get some fur out of it.
”Starting to get my winter coat. Ugh, so not ready for cold,” JJ thought, continuing his way home. It was a particularly dark night, somehow befitting the spooky nature of the holiday and also not helped by the dark clouds obscuring the moon above. He could hear faint sounds around him of chatter and music, still going on from other parties that seemed intent on going through all the way until the morning of the new month. Passing by a tree, he glanced up, slightly unnerved by the very realistic rubber corpse of a bear hanging from it, the owner of the house having coated dyed syrup over it to increase the effect. JJ shivered from the sight and the cold wind that suddenly came up around him. It was then that he decided to quicken his pace to get home, walking a bit faster to turn and walk into a neighborhood park. The pandacat pulled out his phone to check the time, seeing that it was only five minutes until midnight would be upon him.
“Good thing I don't have work tomorrow,” he said to himself, sliding his phone back into his pocket. Once he reached the other side of the park, he stopped for a moment as his ears perked up at a mysterious sound. It seemed to be a faint boom, making him glance behind him. The sound came again, JJ turning his head to see if he'd be able to pinpoint exactly the sound’s source as a third time followed, making him glance down at the ground. A puddle on the ground rippled, some leaves fell off a nearby tree, a car’s alarm started going off in the distance as the fur on JJ’s back stood up, making him step back and look around the area. Suddenly, a loud crash came from nearby as something parted the nearby trees and looked toward him, glowing yellow eyes shining bright. The figure was massive, very close to the same size as the large trees as it turned to look at him, enabling the hybrid to see a large row of sharp teeth inside its mouth, to which he quickly turned and took off running.
He ran quickly, rushing around a corner of a wall and tearing into a park, going as fast as he could trying to keep himself from looking back at the loud thumps and cracking pavement coming from behind. He eventually made it into a forest, rushing through and holding his arms up in front of his face to deflect the blows from the branches and bushes. Soon, he came out into a sandy beach, his paws slipping across the finer texture of the ground as he bolted over to some rocks and hid behind them.
“Gahhh...ahhhh...haaaagh…,” JJ gasped, his heart pounding heavily as he tried to catch his breath, peeking from behind his spot to see if he could catch a glimpse of whatever that...THING was that had been chasing him. Whatever it was, it was enormous, bigger than any living being he'd ever seen in real life. After not being able to spot it, he sat back and shivered slightly, the adrenaline having made him temporarily forget about the cold. He put his head back against one of the rocks and looked up at the sky. The dark clouds had parted slightly to let slivers of moonlight through, illuminating the area as JJ closed his eyes and relaxed.
The short reprieve ended when he heard a loud splash that sent water coming up onto the beach. JJ froze, eyelids snapping open. The mix slowly turned and poked his head up. Rising high above the beach was the same figure, yellow eyes and all, only now much larger and he could see everything on them thanks to the newly exposed moonlight. The being was massive, standing over 80 feet tall and looking down at him. From the curvature of the body, they looked to be female with a very sleek build and lavender scales covering a large part of her body with a white underbelly. Fins trailed off her sides and arms with a large, shark-like tail coming from the back of her head while the ends of her hands were small claws and each of her big toes had a single claw with webbing in-between, obviously some kind of aquatic being that JJ had never seen before, though curiously enough she seemed to be wearing silver bracelets with a set of anklets and some diamond-shaped silver guards on her knees as well. Even stranger was the bright red scarf around her neck. The being’s nose-less face then turned downward, scanning the beach below, eyes moving around before she locked gazes with the scared hybrid before a smile crept across her face, exposing the jagged, razor canines he had seen before. JJ braced himself for whatever was about to happen before she brought one of her webbed hands up in what could only be a wave.
“Hi!” She said, moving her hand back and forth and in a friendly tone, albeit loud given her size “You’re that little panda from earlier, right?” She asked before she kneeled down, looming over him. He glanced around before slowly coming back out from behind the rocks, still wary of her despite the sudden difference of what he had been expecting the creature chasing him to act like once it had caught up to him.
“Ummm...yeah?” He softly replied to her, still worrying about her actual intentions for him.
“What?” She leaned her colossal head down lower near him, trying to hear better which caused him to yelp and jump back, “Oh! Sorry. Didn’t mean to scare you. I just wanted to know if this was yours,” she said, reaching behind her and taking out a very familiar object that looked like a small crumb between her digits.
“My backpack?” JJ tilted his head before he suddenly patted his shoulder, not feeling the strap and craning his head over his shoulder to see it was indeed gone, “Oh...that stupid strap must’ve broken again,” he growled, sighing at the realization of what had actually been happening before he took it out of her hand and set it down on the beach, going back to repairing the broken bit with some tape he had inside, “Thank you...I’m sorry I ran off like that.”
“Oh no no no, I scared the heck out of you so I should be the one apologizing,” the mega-sized fish shook her head, “I realized it when you ran off that you can’t see as well in the dark as I can,” she chuckled sheepishly as she sat down on the beach, crossing her legs over in front of her as her bright smile seemed to be wavering a little bit. JJ looked up from his work at her, more relaxed now that he was fully aware that she had no interest in wanting to eat him.
“You can see in the dark?” He asked her inquisitively, walking over and looking up at her, brushing some of his blonde bangs out of the way.
“Oh...um...yeah!” She smiled, perking up again, pointing a hand to her eyes, “I’ve got really good eyesight. Have to be able to see when you’re swimming in really, super deep water where there’s no sunlight.”
“Whoa,” JJ blinked in surprise, “That’s really cool actually,” he smiled, “You’re from under the ocean?”
“Kinda’,” she replied, “Zora’s Domain is kinda’ close by the ocean but not really IN it, but we do sometimes go out into the water to go fishing and treasure hunting and all kinds of things.”
“Zora? Is that who you are?” He asked.
“Yup!” She nodded, “Well, a Zora is what I am,” she held out her hand to him, like a massive wall in front of him, “I’m Rula.”
“Erm...nice to meet you, Rula,” he said, looking awkwardly around to see if he could figure out a way to actually shake her hand before he resorted to just tapping his paw against her giant digits, “I’m Jackie John...but my friends call me JJ,” he smiled up at her.
“Wow, that’s a long name...I can stick with JJ, right?” she asked. He laughed at the question before he nodded, “Yay!” She clapped her hands.
JJ glanced down at his watch, noticing that it was now 12:30, “Oh shoot...I’m out way past when I was expecting to be,” he looked up at the path that he had just ran through, “And I’m pretty far away too…,”
“Wanna’ ride?” She asked, holding her hand out like a platform.
“Seriously?” JJ spun around and looked at her, “You’d do that for me?”
“Sure!” Rula smiled and nodded quickly, “I mean...I am the reason that you’re out here in the first place so it’d only be fair for me to help out.”
JJ thought about her proposal before he nodded, “Alright. Count me in,” he hopped up onto her hand before he found himself rising up high above the ground below and then gently tucked into the spot between Rula’s neck and her scarf, the fabric feeling incredibly warm against the autumn air and her skin feeling surprisingly soft despite its scaly, moist appearance, “So, do you ever have to go back into the ocean to keep from drying out?” He asked her.
“Sometimes,” she replied, her head turning slightly so she could see him out of the corner of her eyes, “I’ll also just use my magic to coat myself too if I’m away from water for too long,” she giggled, “That’s actually how I’m able to be this big.”
“Wait...how tall are you normally?” JJ cocked an eyebrow, having been familiar with other types of strange powers due to some of his friends.
“Usually about six foot ten,” she replied, “Why?”
“Whoa....I mean, no reason. That’s still, like, really tall,”
“Couldn’t she have just gotten my attention at that height? Oh well...at least I got my bag back,” he thought, closing his eyes and relaxing, the high from the adrenaline finally causing him to crash as he slowly drifted off to sleep.

JJ’s eyes opened as his paw slapped about on his bed to try and silence his phone’s alarm before finally catching its mark, ceasing the vibration.
“Urrrrgh…” He groaned, sitting up. His legs hurt from running so much and he still felt groggy but he at least felt thankful he could take the day to rest, especially after the wild night that he had. He stretched his arms and yawned as he tossed his blanket off and walked out into the kitchen of his apartment, opening the fridge and taking a glass coffee bottle out, twisting the cap off.
“That was definitely nice of Rula to bring me home last night,” he thought, opening up the door to his balcony and stepping out, “I wonder if she’s still around-” His thought interrupted as he stopped in place with a wide-eyed look.
“-town.” He finished out loud as he found himself looking at the giant fishy shape from the previous night curled up on the front lawn of his apartment complex, eyes closed and sleeping soundly. JJ stared at her for a moment before he glanced to the side, seeing a few other residents out on their balconies as well.
“What is THAT?!”
“She’s huge!”
“Is she going to eat us?!”
“Mommy! I wanna’ ride on her!”
“She’s like a freakin’ kaiju!”
JJ heard the comments before he nodded, took a sip from his drink and slowly stepped back into his apartment.
Today was going to be eventful.
