But as for that advice, you may try more contrasting tones. The 'muddy' feeling is probably coming from the use of blander earthly tones. If you try to up the contrast it'll probably nulify that effect. Though it's a fine balance to be atained. Too much contrast and the picture might look too 'solid' or imposing, and that'd take away the furry feeling, even...

try to add coloured light sources, add some blues reds, purples,greens,yellows and stuff, it seems very interesting you can also have blu-ish light sources, just try and study some different coloured light sources, or even some different species, mythilogical creatures always have lots of colour!
Hmmm.. maybe you should try to use less grey. Or if you do, try to avoid cold greys. Some people use light purple or bluish greys as an undercote for fur. Maybe you could give it a try. ;P
