All Hail the one true King Arthur.
Whoo-boy. This guy has been on my list since the day I first witnessed Caliburn ascend to its proper final form and I watched him cleave his way right through the heavens. The sheer amount of detail behind all that intricate armor makes him undeniably intimidating but I’ve tackled some pretty in-depth stuff in my time and I wasn’t about to back down from the ultimate incarnation of a Knight in Shining Armor.
There are a few pictures in my gallery that I look back on and feel the bone crushing cramps creep back in… this will no doubt be one of those.
So, onto the picture itself. I learned quite a bit from my past work with Metal Sonic – I’ve gotten the hang of how to handle and polish a lot of what you see here. If you look closely, I actually used quite a few of the same tricks. However, the thing about the Excalibur armor though, it that there is so much Gold. Gold here, Gold there, Gold everywhere. It’s almost impossible to know where one piece of Gold ends and the next one begins. The biggest challenge for this character comes with trying to color everything in a way that is bold and dynamic, while at the same time leaving space for each individual piece to be distinguished under closer examination. Not easy.
And then there is all the special effects. All the metallic sheens, the carved graphics and the legendary sword itself all need their own allotment of attention. It’s a lot to take in. Enough to make your time management skills spindash in place out of frustration.
Okay, enough rambling on the finer details. I love this variation of Super Sonic. Shoot, I absolutely adore it. I thought it was a great climax to the story of Black Knight and thanks to a stellar design he’s instantly recognizable and memorable. I relished the chance to put my own spin on this awesome set of armor. Eagle Eyes out there may notice some pretty cheeky references engraved in a few spots of Sonic’s suit. Kudos to the lot who can point them out in the comments section below.
I’m so happy I finally got to draw the guy.
So, I’ve got plenty of commission work to get back to. I’ll ice my wrists and see if I can’t get a massage for my poor knuckles then get back to the grind.
****Speaking of commissions. They are open again. Look at the price chart below and hit me up if you’re interested.
