Season 2: Finale: Blue
Taktaktak-shff! Taktaktak-shff!
“Jenga, honey, sit down…” Drez said half-heartedly, his voice tense. He was sitting on the edge of the couch while Jen paced the living room.
Saying the wolf looked worried would have been an understatement. He was gnawing at the inside of his lip, running a hand through his fur, and his eyes were as wide as dinner plates. “They should have been home by now, Drez! It’s almost one o’clock, they’ve been gone nearly six hours! Six! Hours!!” The wolf looked at Drezda, his eyes wide and welling up with tears. The fox started to reach up to hug him, hold him tightly, but then -
Krakow! Krakow! Krakow! Bukketabukketabukketabukketa! Krakow!
They both stared at each other, eyes over-wide. They shuddered silently, ready to bolt.
Fwaboom!!
The did it. Jen ran to their coats, and Drezda sprinted to his room. The fox returned quickly, rifle and pistol in hand. He tossed Jenga the pistol and dragged his coat on. The wolf barely remembered to lock up as they left. Drez leaped into his car, starting it as Jenga got in.
The fox shoved it into reverse and hit the gas hard. He skidded as he wildly raced out of the parking lot. Jen gripped his arm firmly, nodding at the speedometer. Drezda took the hint and slowly eased away from the breakneck speed. They’d do nobody good if they died, he thought to himself.
Drezda maneuvered his way quickly through the streets, heading towards where the explosion had been. He heard more gunshots, sirens. He saw the police lights. He went around, charging into a throbbing mob of men and women, all of them dressed in different gang colors. He closed his eyes, praying silently for forgiveness.
Suddenly, as one started to beat at his window with his fists, something landed on top of the car, and something blue cut the man in half. A gray psionics helmet looked into the window, and the face-cover lifted, to expose Tazna’s shocked face.
“My god! You guys here to fight for us or them?” the tiger yelled, shooting behind him with his pistol.
Drezda opened the window, putting his rifle to the frame. He fired into the mob, and nodded at Tazna. The tiger nodded in return and waded through the fight, swinging his power sword.
Evan knew he was going to die. They were hopelessly out numbered, and they were both hurt. Hell, even the bumper he had was in bad condition.
He glanced over his shoulder at Seph, just as the dragon sprayed a few bullets into a gray fox. The fox made a strangled noise and fell backwards. Evan shuddered, bashing in an otter’s head. He didn’t even know the dragon had his pistols on him, but he was damn glad he had.
The truck had been shot at, and Evan had shoved Seph out as the engine caught fire. The panther barely managed to leap clear, though he knew he was burned, at least on his back.
He’d live from that, he knew. But with this many people trying to kill them…
He caught sight of Drez’s car. His eyes went wide and he swung wildly at anyone around him, trying to move through the crowd. The bumper was all but broken, and he was damn lucky when, as it broke, Seph took up the slack. Evan used his fists as best he could, eventually grabbing a fallen machine gun. He rested it against his arm sturdily. He closed his eyes, gritted his teeth, and prayed to anyone listening that he had a good enough grip.
He pulled the trigger. He shivered as he heard the screams of pain and agony. He’d never wanted to do this. Why had they been shot? Was he going to die here?
He was tackled from the side, and the machine gun flew clear. He hit his head hard on the concrete. His eyes widened as the lemur reached for his throat. He tried to lift his left arm; the lemur had his other pinned. He let out a cry of pain as he did so, his legs jerking. He let out another cry. He still looked at the lemur, his eyes begging for compassion. The animal gave none, its hands wrapping around Evan’s throat.
Something blue arced across his field of vision. He blacked out.
He sniffed.
And sniffed again.
He didn’t smell the smoke of the battle, or the smell of oil and steam. He didn’t smell blood or death.
He smelled…clean.
He cracked one eye open gently, causing a bit of movement around the room. He slowly opened both his eyes wide to the glaring white lights.
It took a moment to adjust, but he eventually made out where he was.
He was in the hospital. Jenga, Drezda, and his parents stood in front of him. He couldn’t tell if Seph was there, because one of his legs was raised in the air.
His parents eyes were wide and tear-filled, and they held each other closely.
Jenga and Drezda looked downright scared and worried.
Evan couldn’t see Seph in front of him, and his eyes widened. As if sensing this, a paw clasped his own. He looked to his right, and, lo and behold, there was the dragon.
His bare chest was festooned with bandages, and he couldn’t open his right eye because of a bandage wrapped around his forehead. There was a splint around his thumb. He smiled gently at Evan.
The panther looked back in front of him, much more at ease. He smiled softly, and the room relaxed. He parents stepped forward.
His mother spoke first. “My god, Evan…” She sniffled, “That…it was so scary. Please…please never do that to your poor old mother again.”
Evan smiled raggedly. “Don’t worry, ma…I won’t.” She smiled, wiping her eyes with a handkerchief.
“Now, son…” His father started, “I’m very glad you’re alright. Just promise me you’ll try your best not to let anything like that happen again, alright? I doubt we’d be the only ones feeling the loss.” His eyes darted to Seph, who blushed ever so slightly.
“Don’t worry, dad…I won’t. I know just how valuable I am to some people.” Evan smiled at his dad, then at Seph. The two shared a smile. He turned back to the others.
Jenga and Drezda merely stood there for a moment, smiling.
“Evan, we’re glad you’re alright. We were really worried when you didn’t show up, so we went out when we heard an explosion.” Drez spoke gently.
Before Evan could even open his mouth to say soemthing, another voice cut in.
“And you better be damned glad they did! They’re probably the only thing that got me to you in time, y’know. That rifle of Drezda’s…Heh, Tyme made a good choice, giving it to him.” Tazna said, stepping from the shadows of the doorway. His power armor clanked as he walked, his helmet tucked under an arm.
Evan blinked, then nodded. “Thank you…all of you. I’m so glad to have people like you close to me. But, if it’s not too much to ask, could I be alone?” The panther blushed gently.
They all nodded, and started towards the door. Seph gave the panther a quizzical look, but began to let go of his hand. Evan shook his head and grinned, holding on tighter.
The dragon cocked his head as Evan nodded to the others. They left, and the door closed gently. The panther turned his head to look at Seph, his eyes full of care and happiness. “Tell me just hw bad you’re hurt, hon.”
Seph smiled gently. “Just some cuts and scratches and bruises. I’ll be fine. You, on the other hand…” He winced.
Evan’s smile faded slightly. “Tell me how bad it is.”
Seph nodded, complying slowly. “Your entire left side is broken; arm, leg, and ribs. You’ve got a few burns spread around, but nothing serious. And you have a good amount of cuts and bruises that are healing up.” The dragon shook his head. “My god, Evan. We’re both lucky to be alive after all that. And with the rest of us fine…” He sighed wearily, shaking his head.
Evan smiled. “I’m just glad that y’all -are- alright, more than how. But one more thing: What about my work? It’ll be weeks before I can even walk…” He frowned. The idea of laying in a bed for more than even a few days was almost horrifying. There was also hospital food to consider. He shuddered mentally.
“We’ve called the gym and arranged for six weeks of personal time with reduced pay, and Penny was happy to give you three weeks of personal time, full pay, and three weeks of half-pay.” Seph chuckled. “I think she wants to make up for how she acted at the shooting range.”
Evan smiled, chuckling. He looked up at Seph, then slowly pulled the dragon towards him. He pulled his face to his…and merely nuzzled his hair. He hugged him with his one arm, brushing the dragon’s spiky hair with his nose.
Seph chuckled softly, giving Evan a gentle hug.
Jenga checked in on them before he left, and smiled to himself. They still held each other, fast asleep.
