My current adopted baby, this is Casper. He (or she) was hatched on Halloween so he got a fitting name. Despite our barn being insulated, every thing sealed shut, and having heat lamps running 24/7, its still cold out there. As in below 0F every night. So we brought him in for fear of losing him to the cold. He's a quarter Japanese silky so he's always going to look like he does in this picture, he'll just get bigger. I know he looks big in the pic but he's smaller then an apple and still fits in the palm of my hand. Unlike Nugget, since he's part silky all he wants to do is be held and cuddled with. He eats of course but heaven forbid you leave him alone for more then a few minutes; he'll start peeping like mad. Luckily he doesn't know he can fly yet (100% silkies fly like rocks) so he doesn't jump out of the box he's in but he'll figure it out eventually. I spend most of my time when I'm not at work carrying him around or sleeping with him under my chin. For those not familiar with silky, they are bred as pets and as such are big babies. As soon as you pick them up they lay down, don't struggle. As chicks they make a purring sound while sleeping and some adults do it as well. Another funny part is chickens have 4 toes on each foot, silkies have 5 toes on each foot, Casper has 4 foes on his one foot and 5 on the other.

Its not easy being a father... Specially to a spoiled chick. I got her (pretty sure Casper is a girl) a bunch of meal worms last night because I was worried she's not getting enough protein from the corn and bread she eats. Talk about a kid with candy, you'd think I gave her the best thing in the world. She gets all excited about them and beats on them good before swallowing them. Trouble is I feed them to her one at a time from the same color dish I have her corn/bird seed in so now she thinks there should be worms in that bowl too. She got on it and kicked most of the corn out before tipping the bowl over tonight after I gave her the meal worms, she was looking for more which is a good thing as she needs to learn foraging skills but a pain as I have to clean up the mess now. When she gets a little bigger I'll try putting them in with a little corn so she can hunt them out but that will have to be later on, just seeing how she handles eating them now. And any of you who have kids will understand the nightmare of putting them to bed. Usually I end up holding her most of the night while typing and around 9pm put her in her box. This usually works out as she'll peep a little and then quiet down to sleep. Now nights when I put her to bed early... peep peep peep for a half hour before she gives up. I feel bad for doing it but chickens go to bed around 5pm where I am so I don't want her getting used to staying up all night. But its hard for me (being a softy) to put her to bed early and the peeping makes me go pick her up and hold her more.
spoiled chick is getting more spoiled... Normally when you put a chick/chicken onto the floor they begin walking around pecking at things and generally being active. When I put Casper on the floor, she turns to look at me and peep like "Why am I on the floor?" The moment I sit down she comes running and jumps up onto my lap to lay down. She has no interest in pecking things or walking around, only being held. She always wants to be under my chin or on my shoulder peeping into my ear and if I dare to put her down for a second I hear about it. Keep in mind that were she still in the barn with her mom she'd have been left by her mom by now to fend for herself, she she's being 'babied' a lot longer then she should be. Still feeding here medicated chick feed, occasionally bread (have a bakery a few houses down that makes it without all the preservatives and crap in it fresh daily) but she's gotten to where she won't bother pecking at the bread if I put some in with her, she'll wait for me to rip little bits off and take her time pulling bits from what I'm holding. And she won't eat the crust either...
Very spoiled.
ATM she's on my lap under a blanket to keep warm, sleep peeping. If you've never heard chickens do this, its a purr/trill sound they make when warm/happy/half awake. Thinking about buying a good feather duster to hang in the box so she can get under it at night to sleep.

Well, today was a bad morning... Other then the usual crap I deal with every day I went to get Casper this morning and she was dead. She'd not been eating much the past couple days other then bread and just wanted to sleep all day. I figured some thing was wrong. Both of her siblings passed away when they are still very small, fine one day and dead the next; guess that's what happens when your chickens are a few generations inbred.
I might take this post down in a couple days, not sure yet.
