In his younger days, he was indeed racist; no one would deny that. In his later years, though, he came to see how limited -- and how bigoted -- many of his racial views had been. (The de Camp biography provides a good overview of Lovecraft's change of mind.)

Yes and yes. But given what he created, I find it somehow forgiveable, even if some sections of his stories make me shake my head a little. :)

I think his greatest literary taletn was to provide an overwhelming sense of fear of something he never actually fully described. Most of his creatures, he'd give a few good details, and then describe the madness and panic it invoked, letting the reader's imaginations fill in the gaps. I still love reading his stories, and it inspires me, though a bit differently than some.

Oh, trust me, crawling abyssmal horrors that drive men to madnes by mere sight is quite set with my mind. Of course, lovecraftian mythos is also nice to poke fun of now and then.

I've adored what I read of his. I ate two collections books of his already. A plus is that I'm very easy to please, and even his -bad- stories interest me. :)

Oddly enough what got me inspired to look into Lovecraft's work more was a drawing my Ashtoreth of a Ch'rai female bartering with some sort of Lovecraftian elder creature. It spiked my interest in both Lovecraft's and his works. :)

Eeeek! I dont think it's -that- good. I could offer to add it as a print on that deviantart thing if you wanted, but I think I would have to go over and fix some of the awfulness first. :)

I love the background! It fits so well that at first I passed it off as your everyday wall or packed bookshelf, but suddenly I checked back and it was a dream world all of its own.

I seem to recall I did the majority of it after the portrait, as I wasnt sure it was actually going to turn out to the point where I'd post it. It was fairly arbitrary, but I'm glad you seem to think it works.:)

It always saddens me when someones popularity and influence comes, at least in part, after their deaths. Lovecraft and Poe to name an immediate few. :) Despite how he might react to a 'degenerate' like me, I would much have liked to met him. :)

He deserves this recognition of being a powerful writer. Even though he'd probably wanna kill himself for the fact his fans are degenerates as you say :P

Well I rather like the way you draw his face, sort of sickly and pale, and the background feels like something from his own Mythos tales too.

Gorgeous portrait, love the 'texture' on the background.
It evokes the aura of his writings whilst showing the true man himself, unembellished by such perceptions of what might lay behind his eyes.

I also am a fan of his work and live a mere ten minutes from his gravesite.
A lovely cemetary, I've taken many pictures of his markers if you're interested. :
