A small encyclopedia explanation for Sedgely's state of being.
Tags: Symbiotic creatures discovered attached to some humans at birth. The hosts for Tags are generally called "tagonists." At a certain age the creature physically separates itself from the host, becoming psychically mature. At this point they float about and can communicate directly with the host's mind. They use a language that spans all senses, auditory, visual, taste, olfactory, touch, balance, arousal, and purpose, to name a few. Tags exhibit very little cognition outside of the ability to observe and collate information about the host's own body, and return that to them when called on.
Tags also serve another vital role for their hosts. Siphoning XP from the environment and converting it into powerful mutations of the hosts body, giving the host the ability to augment themselves into a progressively more powerful form. Tags will level up as well, and can change shape and even gain new function based on how the host spends their XP.
Sedgely, like all tagonists, was born with a Tag. However unlike others, Sedgely was born deformed with no arms and his Tag was bonded permanently to his skull and psychically mature. For an unknown reason, there seems to be something interrupting Sedgely's ability to decide his own levels. A large part of his appearance is due to this condition. His arms are actually a level adaptation, made very early on in his life.

So, there's more I have written about Tags and tagonists, and yes it's turning the terms protagonist / antagonist into in-world jargon.
Tags have polarities. Which makes their hosts either a Protagonist, Antagonist, and Neutagonist. Although this isn't so simple as good, bad, or neutral people. It actually just describes their relationship with other tagonists, Protagonists and Antagonists are drawn to each other, and tend to have very strong bonds. Either as friends or rivals, generating a passive form of XP from their interactions. Neutagonists have no predetermined relationship with other tagonists, but actually have this strong association with non-tagonists. They generate passive XP gain from interactions with normal people. Although they are much rarer.
For example: Sterling Astrea is an Antagonist, while Nova Astrea is a Protagonist, and they're married. And stay married for a long time, and their relationship survives some... bumps.
Sedgely, incidentally is an Antagonist in terms of in world jargon. Despite being the central protagonist of this story in the typical sense of the word.
