Slash's senses were overwhelmed. The conclusion of the battle royal filled the building with raucous cheering that plugged his ears. Flashing lights distorted his vision. Pain bubbled under the surface of his bruised skin. Blood mixed with saliva on his taste buds while his nostrils picked up scents of sweat and buttered popcorn. It all distracted from the moment. This had been the biggest match in the young history of the C.F.A. But with every sensation turned up to one hundred, even in victory he was numb to its magnitude.
Masen and Jamilla helped him hobble up the stage ramp so the show could completely wrap up with them away from the cameras. Once they reached the backstage area, the ambient noise dulled and the multitude of dancing lights became one that was stagnant. Though he could still feel the sting of his bruises and taste the red liquid on his lips, the rest of his faculties calmed.
Slash motioned his friends away so that he could rest against a wall in the hallway. Once his spine touched the drywall, the gravity of his victory weighed him down to the floor. He sunk to the ground with breaths as heavy as the thoughts in his mind. His failures in basketball and previous C.F.A. matches flashed by before he envisioned his late mother, who had lost her battle with a rare disease over a decade ago. "Keep fighting through setbacks and struggles," she had told him, "because no matter the outcome, you'll end up a winner."
Then he thought of his father and his preachings of focus. He heard him talk of it for years, but just recently did he actually listen for the first time. Slash dropped the ball in life on numerous occassions because of his lack of discipline. Finally, it dawned on him that without his father's focus, his life wouldn't have been cared for in the way that it was. He sacrificed everything when Slash's mother was sick and made sure the family lived as well as possible. Slash had repaid his father by throwing opportunities away and disregarding the example that had been set for him.
Tonight, he had rewritten the script. He couldn't fight back the tears welling up in his eyes as his emotions pushed them down the sides of his cheek.
"I found my focus, Pops...I won."
The perspective of Slash at the ending of the match in chapter 21. I wanted something to encapsulate that moment and
pac delivered impeccably as per usual.
