I found Rahxephon to have similar traits in places. If you are looking for something in a similar vein, that is. If I am remembering correctly, think of an alternate Dr. Ikari, bit of a body builder, friendly, caring, who brings people chocolates when he comes back from vacation.

Interesting! This isn't the first time I've heard Rahxephon compared to Evangelion. I might check it out when I get the chance.

True, at the start of the series that was limited to their being present while it was on display at festivals and such...

Part way through the series, they get their giant robot privileges temporarily revoked, and they still show up and help out at the next giant monster emergency. Because it's really not about the piloting, it is about pulling together and helping each other out in times of need. Such as after an earthquake, or during a storm.
