Moriss is an old, mad and unstable marsh owl, who claims a small section of the Mossflower wood as his "Kingdom," after his schizophrenia led him to believe his ancestors were telling him to do so. He terrorized and killed any beast in the area, including Ilona's mother and father. Unable to get inside their cottage, he now bides his time, waiting to kill Ilona to finish "cleansing his Kingdom." His moods vary wildly, from calculating, to impulsive, to mad and berserk, and can change unexpectedly.
