Like all Andarran gryphon slaves, the twins are descended from captives taken during the annexation of the Adalis Republic. 200 years removed from that, the slave markets of Barathrum have had ample time to experiment with the selective breeding of various different gryphon lineages. Amongst these of course are pleasure slaves. Anjay and Sufay are a result of an ongoing custom order placed by an Eredas dragon some decades ago, with rather specific requirements for a female sex slave. Anjay didn't make the cut, and Sufay was too scrawny to be worth breeding from; as a result they were both to be sold off to cover the costs of their breeding and training.
Anjay and Sufay were notably unusually close as brother and sister; a trait not common in gryphons, who tend towards fierce independence and thus have little love amongst siblings. This closeness began at the age of 12, when Sufay was castrated as population control laws required of male slaves not used for breeding; the process left him feverish and all but comatose for weeks, with Anjay nurturing him back to health. Later, at the age of 16 when Anjay was well into her puberty and it was becoming clear her breast size would be too small to qualify for the next round of breeding, it was Sufay who comforted her. Two years later the pair were of age to be sold, and were all but inseparable in their bond.
By Barathrum tradition, slaves at auction would extol their virtues- for slaves in Barathrum keep a percentage of the proceeds of their own sale, thus encouraging good behaviour. Through this the slave themselves, though chattel, had some sway in whom their owner was to be and could in theory avoid excessively cruel or frivolous wastes of their skill. As a high value slave, Anjay was to be priced beyond the means of any but the wealthiest of Barathrum's houses. Sufay on the other hand was not so fortunate; without training, he was to be sold amongst an unskilled lot. A low value position likely meaning a life of hard labour.
Fate intervened in the form of a different Eredas dragon, Melanath. A bystander in the slave market, he was witness to the process, and after the first round of auctions were inconclusive approached Anjay with a private offer. Anjay initially refused, for even a wealthy mercenary was poorer than the poorest of Patriarchs, but saw an opportunity in Melanath's Eredas origins. His purchase of her would count as a sale abroad, exempting the normal categorisation of slaves by skilled and unskilled status. A bitter pill for her- sale abroad meant sterilisation, to prevent foreign competition from establishing their own breeding lines, but would allow her and her brother to be sold as the same lot and thus remain together. Whilst her life would not be opulent, his would not be hell.
The twin's owners were less than pleased to find that their work had been sold at under market value, but hands tied by legalities, were forced to conclude the sale. Anjay was given the herbal sterilising mixture that same day; Sufay was pulled from his lot and sent on the road alongside his sister.
