Cool. It's said that the reason it took Lynyrd Skynyrd so long to get into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame was because the voting members hated that song because of that line about Neil Young.
BTW, in case you didn't know, the man who inspired the name of the band, Leonard Skinner(?) died about a year or two ago. It was in the newspapers here locally, well down in Jacksonville, FL, anyway.

Well, it's not hard to see how the potentially pro-confederate and racist overtones of the song (Particularly shown by that part of it) might make some folks uneasy. Pretty damn hard to avoid that in a pro Alabama/ Southern pride song, I suppose. Might wanna cut 'em some slack for their badass dual lead guitar attack though, or maybe give 'em some counterbalancing PC points for "Saturday Night Special"...
Hadn't heard the news about Leonard Skinner. He was their high school P.E. teacher/ coach, right? I always wondered what he thought about their naming the band after him. Of course it would end up being what he was remembered for...
Their story of him always reminded me of my Junior high P.E. teacher and coach, who was an ex Marine Corps drill sergeant, and a real hardass and petty tyrant, to the point which it was sort of a joke.

If i recall correctly the whole Neil Young line was in put in response to the song "Southern Man" that painted a whole broad stroke to basically anyone in the south was racist.
They made amends and Neil Young said at some point he was kind of ashamed of that song in retrospect.
I never knew however that it was to a point he was a Pallbearer. Neat.
