Dan adjusted the photo frame on his desk for the tenth time in nearly as many minutes. He had agonized nearly as much over the frame itself as he had over where to put it. He wanted everything to be just so - and considering what it contained, who could blame him?
Three smiling faces looked up at him from behind the glass, finally arranged in a position of honour next to the framed photo of his loves. Three little gems, holding within them the best parts of him and their mothers, yet also qualities that made them unique. Vicky, with Krista's smile and warmth, and an unmistakable outgoing streak. Matt, the mischievous middle child, who already showed hints of having inherited Alex's spiritual side. And finally, little Sophie, the quiet yet welcoming lovebug whose very appearance demonstrated who had brought her into the world.
Dan had never pictured himself as a father. The concept seemed so foreign, nary a parental urge manifesting itself. Yet, as each of his children entered his life, the role felt ever more natural to him. Their family was unconventional, to say the least; the sight of the six of them together had raised more than a few eyebrows on passers-by. But when he really thought about it, he wouldn't trade them for anything.
