Half a day had passed after Ella and her master got caught in an ambush that was settled in a commercial outpost where they were supposed to take a caravan to the next kingdom...
The Redgrin clan had a contract with the people of Concordia to fence off an incoming attack from a brutal gang, which leader was known as the Grey Fox. The group of gnolls captured them as they though that Ella’s master was, clearly, a grey fox. Even though he is a wolf. But as rude the gnolls are, they are usually not very bright.
They both were transported and caged in the camp that the clan prepared close to the outpost, Ella’s presence was not even perceived by the captors until they tossed them off in the cage.
As they hit the ground, she could not stay hidden behind his master’s cloak, so Ella tried to put herself together as soon as possible close to his unarmed friend, and unsheathing her sword with a slick sound, she screamed:
- STAY AWAY FROM HIM, YOU MONSTERS!
At first, the agility of the little rabbit caught the captors off guard, but as soon as they analyzed the danger, they just started a loud, group laugh.
Ella flinched a bit as one of the guards entered the cage to reduce her, but she stayed determined to protect her master with all her strength. She thrusted, lunged and stabbed the air in the direction of the gnoll, who dodged the attacks pretty easily, and unarmed her with a hit in the hand. It was not very strong but due to their size difference, Ella was not prepared for this.
All she could do, was throw sand to the gnoll and run to wake up her master. But the sand in the eyes tactic just angered the gnoll a lot.
- Damn you little brat! Gonna tear your hands apart! - Exclaimed as he raised a greataxe half the size of Ella with one hand, and trying to clean his eyes with his other arm. - GRRRRAGH! - Screamed as he hit the ground close to her with the swing of the axe.
The gnoll finally recovered his vision, and with a guttural growl lifted his axe with both hands this time, and aimed to Ella. Then he started to swing the axe to her direction. Ella closed her eyes tightly and hug her friend, who finally woke up, but was dizzy.
- HALT! - Commanded a voice from outside the cage.
The gnoll instantly stopped, his axe still being mid air.
The figure that commanded the order was not visible since the cage was surrounded by the spectators of the fight. But Ella, with her eyes still closed, could hear in the sudden silent the sand and dirt moving, as the feet of the huddle in front of the door of the cage started to step aside. She then heard how the great axe hitted the ground once again, and then started to open one of her eyes, being able to see how the attacker kneeled and leaved the cage briefly after.
When she finally opened her eyes, she gazed to the imposing creature that was watching her, with his arms crossed from toe to head. If she though the gnoll that was attacking her was big, this one was almost twice his size.
But then again, being short doesn't help realizing when other ones are or not on the average, but this one indeed was a big beast.
When their eyes met, she felt like time just stopped as fear froze her a bit. The gnoll expression was dead serious, like a statue.
In the blink of an eye, a big smile appeared from ear to ear.
- It’s been a very long time! - He said happily.
At the speed of ligthning, he grabbed and hugged her close to his face.
Ella didn’t know how to react, but mainly because she was being sweetenly suffocated between the fur of the gnoll.
Her master finally managed to stand up, and fiercely southed:
- Release her down and no one gets hurt! - Said the wolf as he grabbed Ella’s sword from the ground in a quick action.
The gnoll chuckled. The wolf was big, indeed, but with Ella’s sword in his hands just looked like a dog with a metal stick wanting to play fetch. Anyway, he proceded to lower her until her paws touched the ground.
She ran away behind his master, Clinging to his clothes with all her strengh.
- Stay close to me, Ella. - He said, as he adopted a defensive stance, putting his arm around her.
- Ella? - Asked the gnoll, confused. - Who is Ella? - He pointed to her directly. - You are Shirona, aren’t you? This criminal scum is now your companion?
Ella could not make a sound, she was the small one in a battle of giants, so she just buried her head in his master's cloak, sobbing a little. The last thing she expected was that her first mission would be her last, and started thinking about all her friends. Haru, Darcy… Lady Carmine… She could not say a proper goodbye to them.
So… You are not her… - The gnoll said, followed with a short, disappointed snort. - I’m sorry. - He looked down, and changed his stance for a lower one. - I didn’t meant to scare you. I just thought you were a friend of mine that I haven't seen in a very long time… - He then proceed to turn himself, and walk defeated out of the cage.
Ella’s master saw an opportunity that could not let pass, so he tried to charge against the gnoll’s back.
But he could not even take a step foward, as Ella had him grabbed by the forearm. And looked him in the eyes.
- Wait! He clearly doesn’t want to fight us! Why would you even attack him?
Her master quickly broke the grab of her pupil, and answered:
- We need to escape, and alive if possible! We can’t let opportunities like this just go! Don’t you remember your training?
He then tried to proceed with the lunge, but his arm was suddenly stopped by a firm grab.
- Maybe YOU are the one that should listen to your friend. - Replied the gnoll, lifting ella's master by the arm, gripping him with such strenght that made him grunt in pain and drop the sword once more
Ella quickly went in front of him, and demanded:
- Stop! Is this what Shirona would want you to do!? - She wasn't so sure of what could happen after, but if Ella was good on something, was being able to melt hearts.
His master was again in the ground grabbing his hand and checking that nothing was broken.
- Here - Stated the gnoll. - You will come with me. - He said as he grabbed her and took her off the cage. - You two, don't let him escape. Keep an eye on him. Don’t harm him. And bring him some water.
Ella was kicking and punching the gnoll as hard as she could, as she watched the cage with his master got far, and far away in the distance.
A few hours later, deep in the woods.
Ella was so tired of recklessly fighting the gnoll, that she was just now carried like a potato sack.
- Will you stop moving now? - The gnoll asked.
- I'm soooo tired… - Was ella's response.
He keept walking a bit more, but now with Ella mounted in his back. Ella was very tired, but she couldn’t hide the spark of joy of being soooo high from the ground, that she could even smell the flowers from the trees even better.
They stopped by a stump that was close to a small river. The water was crystal clear, and with some colorful fishes swimming up and down of it.
He left the bunny on top of the stump, and sat in front of her, looking into her eyes.
- So. You are Ella?
- Y-yes. Ella answered a bit scared. - And y-you are?
Feeling the fear on her, he stopped looking directly at her, and focused on the water, that reflected both of them.
- I am Gnorr. Leader of the Redgrin clan. - He said, solemnly, but in a tired way. - What were you doing in Concordia today?
Not feeling the menacing eyes from the creature, Ella proceed to answer with more relief. She then started to look around the place. It was a small clear space in the middle of the forest, quiet, relaxing, and with plenty of good smells.
- I’m in a mission! - She happily said.
- A mission? - Gnorr asked to himself surprised. He keep staring to their figures in the water, and a smile came back again. - I used to do a lot of “missions” too.
Ella finally noticed the river, and started looking a the little fishes. Not giving a lot of attention to his captor at first. But then she noticed their reflections in the water. They looked the same height thanks to the stump she was in, and could see that the gnoll had a sad smile in his mouth.
- Oh? Your father also made you to make his job? - Ella finally asked, now looking at him.
Gnorr looked to her once again, trying his best to not look menacing.
- No. Not at all. - He paused for a moment. - I am doing that right now. My missions usually were very crazy and fun. And risky! - He looked to the sky before continuing. - But luckily I was not alone.
- Huh. But you are not alone now. A lot of… Things like you are up there! - Ella pointed.
- That does not mean that I am happy. It’s been a long since the last time I saw my friends. - Said as he closed his eyes and breathed deeply.
Ella realized that he was not feeling very well. So she decided to quickly change the course of the talk.
- So. Tell me about your missions! - Said standing up with a jump in the place - Did you see dragons? Mermaids?
The question caught Gnorr’s attention, who watching how excited the rabbit was, started telling her some of his old tales with enthusiasm.
After hours of mimic, laughs, dances, and exchanged questions later.
A sudden gurgling noise coming from Ella’s tummy, followed by a expression of pure defeat by her, stopped Gnorr from his storytelling mode.
Looking to the sky, it has started to turn orange.
- Well, Ella. Seems like you are hungry. I’m pretty sure that your friend is hungry too. - Said Gnorr as he lend her his hand .
Ella grabbed it, and then he proceed to pull her up his back again.
- He is always saying that food must be only consumed when it’s turn to take a ration. But I know that he secretly loves food - She shrugged.
- In this case, we better hurry and organize a “So sorry feast” for both of you!. Did I tell you that I also love cooking? - He said as he inclined himself on all fours. - You better hold on tight, we are going to go fast!
He then started to run as fast as he could through the forest, being happy to meet a new friend.
Ella, on the other hand, was having an unforgettable experience. She never had gone so fast in her life. She love the feeling of the air caressing her face, ears and hair.
She felt like she would be free in no time.
